I've been having the same problem. Vlc will play 720p mkvs on ipad no problem (there is the occasional slight pixelation) but it freezes and pixelates all the time on 1080p. Its pretty much the same problem no matter which media player I use (I've tried VLC, Playable, and PlayerXtreme.) The only way I can get 1080p mkvs to play is if use convert using handbrake and import to itunes, it's fine, i guess, but I run into a lot of subtitle issues and I'd rather not wait hours to convert my videos. Is there a player that works that I haven't tried yet?

Only iPad Retina-model is capable of playing 1080p content.
All others (Mini included) will have issues with playback of 1080p content.
So if you only have 1080p content and you wanna play that on your iPad, you will have to invest time to convert.
Handbrake, mkvMergeGui and Subtitle Edit will do the job !

Please add HW Decoding for Jailbroken devices. I watch a lot of anime, so all of my videos are .mkv with 1080p video quality.

Patch welcome. We don't use any jailbroken devices and don't endorse this either, especially considering that jailbroken devices account for half of our crash report numbers (while the usage share is only roughly around 5%) because of weird OS hacks.
