How to view WMP subtitles embedded in WMV files?

How to view WMP subtitles embedded in WMV files?

Postby gobo760 » 28 Jul 2013 01:40

I have various WMV files where the subtitles track is actually embedded in the self-contained WMV file (a WMP text file gets embedded in the header of the WMV). You can view the subtitles just fine when you watch the WMV files in Windows Media Player. But for some reason, when I go to enable subtitles in VLC for these movies, there is no option to turn the embedded subtitles on (like there is with say a DVD where you'd select the available subtitles track that you want).

How would I enable the captions in VLC? If it's not possible to view them in VLC, is there by chance any plans to make this functionality available at some point in the future? WMV (.asf) is the only widely used video format that's capable of allowing subtitle tracks to be embedded directly in the video file without it actually being burned in permanently to the picture (that I know of anyway), so I'd really like to figure out how to allow this feature to be used in a player that's as user-friendly and universal as VLC if possible.

Also as a side note, and just to make sure I'm correct, are there any other widely used self-contained video file formats that are capable of having subtitle files embedded into the video file and playable by VLC, in the same way that subtitled WMV files can be viewed in Windows Media Player in a the same kind of single-file, self-contained way?

Thanks.
