Trying to convert .DAT file to avi or mpg

Postby alina » 20 Jun 2013 16:12

I have 2 .DAT files that I want to convert to avi or mpg or any format that will be read by youtube. These files were recorded off the television using Conia equipment and are about 7 minutes long each.

VLC will play the files but will not convert or record or save them. I have tried converting them using multiple different converters and most won't even recognise them to play them, let alone convert them. I thought maybe the problem was one of DRM and I've tried stripping them but, as I say, basically no other program will play them, other than VLC. I am at my wits end. Any advice, kind people?

(Incidentally the clips are of interviews I did on tv so it's not like I want to rip-off someone making money from this media).

Please open Tools -> Messages (set Verbosity to 2) before you start the conversion and then paste the full resulting log here or on Pastebin.com if it's too long.

Also upload a short sample of a problematic file to either http://streams.videolan.org/upload/ or to EmbedUpload.com, the latter will upload the file for you to several other hosts and then post the link to the file here.

Cut it with DGsplit and read here about how to do it:

50 MB max should be enough.

Unfortunately that does not work. VLC will play the files but otherwise the program does not respond to the files as if they exist. It will not convert them or save them or record them or manipulate them in any way.

A log will be created (make sure you set Verbosity to 2 before you start the conversion process) and we want to read it, even if it's a short one.
We also want a problematic source file sample.
Nothing can be done without this.
