Playing a file at a different frame rate

Postby Silks » 18 Jun 2013 17:01

Hello folks,
Sorry if this is a newbie question, but I searched the forums and couldn't find an answer:
If I have a video file encoded at 23.98 fps, and I want to play it back at 24 fps, do I have to re-encode it? Or can I somehow tell VLC to play it back at 24 fps?
Thanks in advance for any help.

FYI, what's commonly referred to as 24 fps for movies is actually 23.98 or 23.976, so that is the correct frame rate for playback.

Okay, thanks, but that doesn't really answer my question.

Sure, you can go to Preferences -> Show All -> Input / Codecs

Change Playback speed from "1" to "1.00083402835".

You won't be able to tell the difference. Just be sure to set it back to "1" when done so the videos are played at the correct framerates again.
