Type 1 DV-AVIs don't work?

For questions and discussion that is NOT (I repeat NOT) specific to a certain Operating System.

Type 1 DV-AVIs don't work?

Postby neilski » 14 Jun 2013 01:27

Hi.

Am working on transferring my mini-DV tape collection to the PC...
Had some hiccups while using Scenalyzer to capture as type 2 DV-AVIs (some audio glitches), though I did find that the type 2 AVIs worked perfectly in VLC.
Then tried capturing as type 1, and the glitches during capture are now more or less gone, but I now find that VLC doesn't much like these AVIs. Boo hoo!
Symptoms: audio is awful (playback ok ish on left channel but right channel is a bit noisy or just totally noise), and also rewinding/seeking doesn't seem to work properly either.

Win XP SP3, VLC v2.0.6.

Any ideas?

thanks in advance!
Neil
PS: new here, so go easy on me ;) I have no reason to think this problem is OS-specific so have chosen the General board for the query... hope this is right approach!

Please open Tools -> Messages (set Verbosity to 2) before you start the playback and then paste the full resulting log here or on Pastebin.com if it's too long.

Also upload a short sample of a problematic file to either http://streams.videolan.org/upload/ or to EmbedUpload.com, the latter will upload the file for you to several other hosts and then post the link to the file here.

Cut it with DGsplit and read here about how to do it:
viewtopic.php?f=14&t=57724&p=193335#p193335
50 MB max should be enough.

Thanks for the suggestion - hadn't realised vlc could output debugging messages :)
While working on generating sensible samples for investigation I realised along the way that there are two (separate?) problems.

Firstly, 32 kHz 12-bit DV streams cause audio problems, but only in type 1 DV AVIs as far as I can tell. (This makes some sense to me since type 2 DV-AVIs apparently just duplicate the audio in a separate stream of some kind which then typically gets used in preference to the interleaved audio in the main DV stream, though I may be confused).
Secondly, handling of type 1 DV AVIs seems flaky in general (e.g. seeking causes major problems), with either 32 kHz 12 bit or 48 kHz (16 bit) audio.

I've uploaded a file to http://streams.videolan.org/upload/ as suggested but it didn't do what I thought it would and provide a reference number so I have no idea how anyone will find it :) In the description I entered "Demo of problem with type 1 DV-AVI and 32 kHz audio" if that helps :?
It's the first 40MB of a 200MB file so a bit over 10 seconds worth. If you play a few seconds the audio normally goes mad (not always in same way so I'm guessing it's related to uninitialised mem?) and if you try to seek (e.g. back 3 seconds from 7 seconds) the playback gets screwed.

Hope this all helps to pin down what's up. I would be happy to try and help fix the bug btw, if free tools are adequate to do so (e.g. either Linux stuff or things like the Express versions of Visual Studio).

Finally, here's the message log from me playing the file, and then seeking backwards 3 seconds. The audio glitches don't appear to generate any warnings/debug msgs, but the playback grief generates plenty (not always the same stuff).

Re: Type 1 DV-AVIs don't work?

Update: nobody replied (sob!) which I'm choosing to believe must mean that my upload to the videolan website has vanished into the ether. (Or at least I have noooo idea how anyone's gonna see it.)
So the file's now accessible from http://www.embedupload.com/?d=7LD4WEOYEY
Oh and I've also tried playing it under Linux, also with version 2.0.6 - this fails in the same way (both sound and seeking are bust).

(I'm also now attempting to compile VLC under Linux to investigate what's broken... bit of a slog tho, not there yet.)

It's a rather specific question. I doubt anyone knows the answer, and not so many people browse the forum.

No worries. Is my uploaded video only visible to special users though? (The one on the videolan website I mean.)

Will have a go at finding the problem myself and see how far I get...

Update: I succeeded in compiling the git tree (2.1.xxx pre Rincewind or similar) and the problem is gone!
On balance, this is rather good news though it does rather kill my hopes of having the satisfaction of fixing a bug :)

This probably either means that libav got fixed in between or that vlc itself had some fixes...
Now I'm wondering if it's worth bothering to find out what the actual fix was - might make sense if the Twoflower series has some more planned releases?

VLC had some fixes for that part.

Aha! :)
I failed to find anything while googling - do you have the git commit details or any kind of link to the patch discussion (mailing list thread, forum posts, whatever form it took)? I'm just curious really, to understand the nature of the bug. Am also considering helping out with VLC now (since I've gone to all the trouble of building it ;))
Thanks for the info!
