Choppy playback of wmv files

Postby wul62 » 11 Jun 2013 13:01

It strikes me that once I wish to playback a .wmv file, it often starts out be distorted/choppy, but after waiting for say 5-10 seconds(while playback continues), it all gets well again.
I.e. in most case (if not all), the garbled/blocky playback, or whatever it is called, is at the start only.

If it is a longer clip, well, one might forget about the start and pick up the rest, but in case of just short clips most of the introduction may fall away which could be essential.

Below some examples.

I noticed that it involves wmv9

Upload a short sample of a problematic file to either http://streams.videolan.org/upload/ or to EmbedUpload.com, the latter will upload the file for you to several other hosts and then post the link to the file here.

If needed cut it with DGsplit and read here about how to do it:
viewtopic.php?f=14&t=57724&p=193335#p193335
50 MB max should be enough.

Same format hence same problem as this one:
viewtopic.php?f=2&t=111543

You can add your comments, log and sample file link to ticket 8795.

Meanwhile done.
The videofile should be already be available at vlc.
I hesitate to create yet another new account for use at EmbedUpload.com..

I am having the same issue with 2.1.1. I noticed the aforementioned ticket has been closed. I'm a novice user so I don't understand the language used in the ticket, but is there a solution at this time? Or will I need to wait for the new 2.2 version?

Yes, you need 2.2.0 or a 2.2. nightly build.

Installed v2.1.3 being the latest version from VideoLAN home page.
The choppy playback still exists.
Ticket #8795 is closed defect (fixed)
As said it is limited to the first say 5-10 seconds. Thereafter playback is okay.

Am sorry, I am a newbie - but what do you mean with a nightly built?
Is that a beta version or something?
Something that is not entirely working properly in the official release,
I should then download a non-official version ?

Thanks. Downloaded and installed that version.
Tried about 10 different .wmv files and they all look okay.
Will keep and eye on it and get back here in case of an issues.
(Why not include it in the official release?)

Thanks again

I can confirm that the 64-bits version of the 2.2.0 git build of 3-April-2014 of VLC successfully ran my choppy WMV without any problem. Only thing now is to make it live as I hate to use beta versions and I won't stop using VLC!
