VLC being the Bully on the block, taking over m3u files!

Postby aairon » 21 Apr 2013 16:23

Hello this has been an ongoing issue for some time. here is what I have tried so far.
I am accessing a web page that streams a local police scanner and much prefer winamp for this propose as it displays the detailed info about what channels, etc I am hearing where as vlc just shows me a cone in the middle of a blank screen.
I have taken these steps
1) Completely Uninstall VLC (winamp now works perfect)
2) Reinstall latest VLC, while installing, under file associations/other untick m3u and m3u8, untick ALL audio file types.
3) tick delete preferences and cache, complete install.
4) in winamp confirm that in file associations m3u and m3u8 are selected.
5) reboot and go to the scanner streaming site that uses .......mp3.m3u and click, BAM! VLC once again playing NAZI player and takes over  .

Any suggestions? even the slightest one would be much appreciated I'm about to try CCCP but would hate to have to do that as I like the Video features of VLC so much. Thanks in advance for any help.

Are you sure the m3u association is not in your browser?

I use Firefox and the only place where I see any "associations" is the applications tab under options.
Indeed when I looked I couldn't find any M3u or M3u8 file types I did find two instances of Mp-3 both assigned to VLC.
I have changed that to winamp and will test now and post results here.

EDIT: No joy Vlc still insists on being the m3u player.

I've since found that disabling the VLC plugin in firefox allows winamp to takeover m3u files.
Do I need this plugin?

Having not received any answer I still would like to know why, when I disable ALL audio file types and also M3u/M3u8 file types upon VLC install, the firefox plugin that vlc installed insists on taking over M3u/M3u8 streams. The only solution is to disable the plugin completely.
Am I missing something here? what else will I miss out on without this plugin?
Well thanks in advance to anyone who can shed some light on this.
