Telnet Control of VLC

Hi,
can someone point me to the correct syntax for telnet control. I've been able to open a telnet session but I can't glean enough info from the built in help file.
I want to be able to create, start and stop a stream and switch inputs to the stream. i'm trying but for most commands I get syntax errors and unknown command errors. Sorry if this is in the wrong forum.
