Audio distortion.. No more!

Postby Iluvatar » 27 Aug 2005 01:36

Hey folks!

I run an AMD64, and for a long time, I had a hard time getting any useable sound from my VLC.
But these steps worked for me..

Preferences > Advanced [x] > Audio > Output Modules > "select Direct X from the drop-menu" > Direct X > Uncheck (Use float32 output) > Save&restart...

Hope this works for the rest of you.. took me about 5 months to get this --please stay polite-- working.

-reset all
-equalizer 10 bands @ filteropitions
-win32 waveout on "output modules" (advanced [x])
-"Output modules" ---> "DirectX"---> disable "use float32 output" (advanced[x]).

I think this mixture of settings should make some of us happy :)
I also disabled "use float32 output" on WeaveOut... worked great for me... thank you all... this player is quite something. Best image ever in my monitor.

If you use DirectX Output set the "Sound->Hardware Acceleration" in the dxdiag program to "minimal" or "off" - worked for me :D

Thanks, but it didn't work. I'm using MPClassic for this streams, with no problems. I'll wait for the nest release.

Thanks, but upgrading realtek ac97 codes help with some of the wm audio problems, still some distorsions. The audio for the RTVE is still missing, and in the stream view the codecs are undef.

First, I lost sound as others complained, then I reset "Output Module" as default and changed "Audio Output Frequency (Hz)" as 48000 in the Advanced Options of Audio. It worked for me.

Thanks.
This solution worked like a charm for me. Thanks!

solved the problem with new driver

Postby timeloop » 13 Sep 2005 21:42

 The problem exist on my motherboard with NVIDIA nForce4 chipset.
I solved the problem with new driver for the AC´97 chipset.

Originaly i had the offical nForce4 driver for the build in audio on my system, after replacing them with the new AC´97 driver from Realtek the sound bug is solved.

 Driver page from realtek

*S*Y*S*T*E*M*******************

- vlc-0.8.4-win32-beta
- WinXP Prof. SP2
- AMD Athlon 64
- MSI K8N Neo4:
  • NVIDIA nForce4 Ultra
    8 Channel ALC850 Onboard Audio
    (AC'97 Codec)
*******************************
Should work with vlc 0.8.2 also.

--------------------------------------------

@timeloop

will eben nicht.

grüsse sven

Most players don't use DirectX + float audio.

Most use waveout (but that doesn't support digital audio output)
And most applications output int audio.

Nvidia drivers say they support float audio, but in reality they don't
And the DirectX Hardware acceleration turns this into an incredible noise.

It IS a driver issue, and "other players just work" is not proof that the drivers are 100% ok.

maybe it would be wise to output/convert to 32bit fixed instead of float!? then you can maybe close all the audio problem threads ...

Audio Output Module (Choose Win32 waveOut extension output)

@Dandruff

nochmals danke!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

obarthelemy

disabling float32 worked for me too

Postby obarthelemy » 18 Sep 2005 11:48

i solved the problem be deactivating: "use float32-output" at directx and waveout, so i didn't have to change the output-module to win32-waveout...
but not 100% perfectly, the sound still crackles a wee bit (not a lot at all, VLC IS usable).

I read somewhere (sorry, can't remember where) that there is an issue with the PCI bus getting saturated because nvidia does not report the state of the sound queue correctly. That's greek to me (or rather, that's geek to me), but maybe you can lake something of it ;-)

I make the following of it: "Nvidia makes really sucky audio drivers, and should pull out of the audio market and keep to video"
