New to Forum...Banging my head on the wall:(

Hey folks, wondering if i could ask for some help...I am seriously struggling here; i am trying to figure out the ropes behind the VLC. It seems so simple, and i am sure it is, yet i cannot get this to work. Rather than ask what i am doing wrong, what do i need to do to convert a file? I have searched all over and cannot get it right.
If it matters, i am using a current download, Have two diff computers, Mac, Windows Vista. Both are latest of latest.
