Can't View Axis 213 Stream But Quicktime Will

Postby bradcarter » 07 Sep 2005 18:25

I can't get VLC 8.2 to open an MPEG 4 stream from the Axis 213 camera. I can open it using Quicktime Player. It looks to be something with the demux module but I'm not quite sure. It says the stream successfully opened but no video displays. Can you guys take a look at the log below and see what you think?

Thanks,

Brad

I'm not sure what to do about the line wrap? Sorry about the side scrolling.

The above was a copy and paste of the whole message window. I did a clear on the window (on the pc) then accessed the stream and copied the results. The result is the same on the Mac but I'll post it at the end of this message.

I did get the stream from the camera using VLC by accessing the stream with rtsp://<ip>:554/mpeg4/media.amp. This which will work, but then I can't take the raw stream and use it in Darwin Streaming Server which will feed the streams to VLC. With the older firmware I could place the SDP file generated by the camera in the DSS Movies directory and play it from there. Now DSS won't even relay the stream. It looks like something went wrong in the SDP file which probably falls back into Axis' lap but it also doesn't explain why Quicktime 7 on the Mac can open the SDP file and play the stream. Here's the SDP file.

This Axis 213 firmware is a beta copy. Axis didn't tell me to stay quiet about it or make me sign anything so I'm sure it's okay to post details about it. I called them because I'm looking a purchasing a few of these cameras this year and more next year and was making a decision about what camera I'll go with. I tried getting a hold of the tech that sent me the beta but didn't have luck. The person I talked to in their tech support sounded like I was sinning even asking for the first person I talked to. I did put all of this into a replay email but it goes to the generic Axis support address.

Their multicast mode in version 4.13 had a bug in it where if the camera was power cycled it would no longer allow access to the MPEG 4 stream. I had to do a factory defaults on the camera and redo the settings everythime. Version 4.30beta8 fixed that and also allows for Unicast mode. Those are the 2 biggest things I needed.

Here's the Mac's VLC log output of the video.sdp path as well as the media.amp path. video.sdp doesn't work, media.amp does work. I tried accessing the video.sdp path using rtsp:// but VLC then says no suitable access module was found.

Could you try starting VLC from Terminal.app?
You will get even more output that way, from livedotcom module about the RTSP session.

/Applications/VLC.app/Content/MacOS/VLC -vvv
to launch it from the commandline .
Don't use PMs for support questions.

OK, just a thought. Perhaps the multicast mode of the device is broken, and QT falls back to a unicast setup? How long does it start before the SDP streams starts in QTP ?

BTW. There is some discussion going on on the livedotcom mailinglist about the same device i think.

Quicktime starts buffering the video right away. It buffers for about 2 seconds then displays the video. This does seem a little long to me because the computer and camera on on the same 100mb network.

I'm a little new to the unicast/multicast thing. If I'm pointing my url to http://<ip>:554 isn't the 554 port telling it I want unicast?

On a multicast aware network a client points to the ip address (say it's 192.168.0.1) of the camera/server and then receives the multicast address and tunes to that? At this time if the stream has to be duplicated it's done on the switch/router. Sound right?

Do you have a link for the livedotcom mailing list? Google searches only came up with project pages that include livedotcom.

I just got this reply from Axis. So is Quicktime is seeing it as a unicast and switching to it or Quicktime is requesting the camera's multicast stream? Is there a way to force this in VLC?

Brad
Brad,
Video.sdp i.e. constant multicast delivery is in 4.30 disabled by default in order to avoid that products are sending multicast traffic on a network without any users requesting it. Instead in the new version session is set up with help of the rtsp.

In order to get video.sdp to work in the same way as previously, you need to enable multicasting without user interaction. Go to System Options>Advanced>Plain Config>Network and check the box Always Multicast. Save settings and then VLC will work with both
http://<ip>/mpeg4/1/video.sdp

and rtsp

rtsp://<ip>:554/mpeg4/1/media.amp
Thanks,

Re: Can't View Axis 213 Stream But Quicktime Will

Postby jaimono » 06 Jan 2008 18:03

Man, whoever you are... Thanks a lot!
I was strugling to get vlc tramsmiting a live feet from an Axis 213 camera, the only option I had was to use the rtsp server but that server closes the stream after a minute or so.

Now that I know how to enable constant multicast I am able to broadcast the cameras, really thanks a lot! You have made my work a lot easier now :D

BTW in that same Network config panel you can find the rtsp timeout and change it, but, Who cares now!?
