Problem playing .wmv files

Hi,

I have recently downloaded vlc 2.0.5 and am wanting to use it to view security camera footage in .wmv format. The footage plays but none of the vlc buttons work; I can't move the scroll bar, pause, stop, speed up, slow down etc. which is what I need the program for. I have downloaded onto separate machines with the same result. I have tried many .wmv files. I am using Windows 7 64bit Op Software.
