To make a long story short, I need to do it again (because I think I made some bed decisions regarding resolution/framerate/etc.), but I can't reproduce the quality I managed before, and I made the cardinal mistake of not documenting what I was doing while I was doing it.
The main problem is that my videos are now coming out with some bad combing from the interlacing. I looked at the previous video (which I'm pretty sure came straight out of VLC), and there's no combing in it. I do remember having an issue with it originally, but somehow I got past it, and I can't for the life of me remember if I did something about it, or if it just decided to start working.
Here's what avconv says about the original "good" file:

- Open VLC (2.0.5) and hit Media->Convert/Save...
- On the Capture Device tab, select my Video Device, an Audio Device, NTSC video standard, and hit Advanced Options.
- Enter Width=696, Height=480, Framerate=29.97, click Ok, then click "Convert/Save"
- Choose a destination file, leave Profile at the default "Video - H.264 + MP3 (MP4)", and click "Start". (The Deinterlace check doesn't seem to do anything... I've tried with and without.
I'm rather confused at this point. Does anyone have any ideas on what I may have done before that could have crushed the interlacing?
