Downloading digital camera file including AVI motion JPEG

I need a step by step for loading a file from my Olympus EPL1 camera via USB cable. (Tower can't read the memory card) My eight year old HP is not recognizing the HD movie JPEGs. It merely skips over them loading still jpegs. I am not seeing how to capture my camera on the newest version of VLC. Not good having the capability of good HD movie footage without the download. Also trying to do projects with an 8 year old computer isn't good. Was advised at the camera store to use VLC and that there are lots of complaints with download problems on the newer cameras and older systems. I had an older version already in place and deleted it yesterday, 3/25/13 for the newest version. Also can I then move that file on VLC to "My Pictures"? Please advise, thank you.

VLC does not download files, it just plays them...

How can you just play something if you don't have it loaded into VLC or am I not understanding how VLC operates? Also wondering then why the camera shop owner suggested VLC for aquireing files off the camera.
