Blu-ray player for Mac? GPL violation

Postby Targetlufa » 08 Dec 2011 11:09

Hi, I came across a Blu-ray player compatible with Mac OS couple of months ago, developed based on VLC source code. To make contribution to VLC community by the essence of GPL, I think they need to share the open source code.

This page declared that the player “made possible by the VLC and Mongoose.” Nevertheless, it’s always under construction, but the products are able to purchase for months.

This is very interesting. I can see there was a need for a Blu-ray capable player for MAC OS and Apple iOS devices.
But shouldn't this Blu-ray code also be relayed to the VLC development team to help make VLC capable of playing Blu-rays for PCs and MACs as well?

I can understand if the programmer wanted to keep the Blu-ray technology regarding playing it on iOS mobile devices away from VLC as I'm not sure VLC originally supported iOS devices or not.

On that note, this Blu-ray code may help speed up implementing Blu-ray playback on Windows, Linux, and Android mobile devices since I'm sure the original intent of Macblurayplayer is just for MAC or Apple related Blu-ray product support.

I think this General Public License issue should be pressed to be fair to the original VLC blood and sweat team as it is was built upon their code. The Blu-ray code has the potential to improve VLC. The cycle of the child code returning the favor back to the parent code would be beneficial for Macblurayplayer as VLC's new source code would still be accessible for him/her to draw from to improve Macblurayplayer.

Those people have already been asked their code.
