With a specific avi file: .srt works but .smi won't

With a specific avi file: .srt works but .smi won't

Postby Shuidong » 28 Feb 2013 22:54

Hi all, I hope somebody has an answer to this problem:
.smi subtitles won't work with a specific video file(.avi) while a .srt does show normally

The .avi file in question is working fine with .srt but the .smi(subs in another language) won't show correctly. The fonts are set right and the encoding too. Playing another video with the same .smi files will show the subs correctly and .smi files from another movie won't show correctly in the .avi that's having problems. So again: .avi file won't show .smi subs right, but .srt are ok.

How is this possible???

Of course, smi is underspecified, so not supported 100%

Ok, even if not 100% supported, it doesn't make sense that file "subtitles1.smi" doesn't work with "movie1.avi", but does work with "movie2.avi". Or does it? I don't get it...
subtitles1.smi works fine, shows normal subs, just not in combination with movie1.avi.
Same goes for subtitles2.smi, works fine but not with movie1.avi.

Do you load both subtitles .srt and .smi with your video? Video > Subtitles Track > Track 1(srt), Track 2(smi)?

Yes, both are loaded.

OK, so I tried to move the .srt out of the folder so it won't automatically load. The .smi worked after that! Thanks!

So... why is it that the .smi won't work if other subs are loaded?

Unicode autodetection? Which of the files is encoded in UTF-8?

The .smi file is encoded with korean(euc-kr/cp949) i think, that's the setting in my VLC player at the moment i played it. The .srt i don't know.

You could use Notepad++ to find it out easily and to convert from ANSI to UTF-8 or vice versa (menu: Encoding). If one of subtitles is in unicode format, then another subtitles are treated the same way.
