asf files and ISO MPEG-4 Video V1 ?

Postby mocharaia » 04 Jan 2004 04:43

Trying to play asf files that come off a Mustek DV-4000 mini camcorder with no success so far.

Using windows media player, i was able to get video but no sound. (actually after upgrading to panther, it's not giving me the video anymore either...)

Using VLC, I am able to get audio only. The video window opens but it is all garbled.

Is there any hope of getting this working properly?

One weird thing I noticed when I open the Info window in VLC is that the video codec name is listed in the audio stream section and vice versa...

At any rate, I can supply a sample file if it will help.

The video codec is:
ISO MPEG-4 Video V1
MP4S

The audio codec is:
IMA ADPCM

A sample might be appreciated. Give it a clear name and upload it to ftp.videolan.org/incoming

This file seems pretty broken.
Both Mplayer OSX and Windows Media Player even crash on it. I get some video with VLC, but it is completely screwed and i keep getting:

asf warning: p_peek[0]&0x80 != 0x80
ffmpeg warning: cannot decode one frame (1057 bytes)
ffmpeg warning: cannot decode one frame (875 bytes)
ffmpeg warning: cannot decode one frame (838 bytes)
asf warning: p_peek[0]&0x80 != 0x80
ffmpeg warning: cannot decode one frame (1010 bytes)
ffmpeg warning: cannot decode one frame (866 bytes)
ffmpeg warning: cannot decode one frame (889 bytes)
ffmpeg warning: cannot decode one frame (949 bytes)
asf warning: p_peek[0]&0x80 != 0x80
ffmpeg warning: cannot decode one frame (1048 bytes)
ffmpeg warning: cannot decode one frame (952 bytes)
ffmpeg warning: cannot decode one frame (977 bytes)
asf warning: p_peek[0]&0x80 != 0x80
ffmpeg warning: cannot decode one frame (998 bytes)
ffmpeg warning: cannot decode one frame (995 bytes)
ffmpeg warning: cannot decode one frame (826 bytes)
asf warning: p_peek[0]&0x80 != 0x80

So... --please stay polite-- up file, if Windows Media Player 9 on Windows XP reads it you are lucky, other players don't play it.
My suggestion for these kind of files and the people that produce them: rm -rf

nice attitude. the files play fine on all versions of windows. in fact they even play in os9 version of media player in some cases.

does your cameras drivers install some extra codec? Also, I've seen some things that may cause the problem when investigating it. Don't know if I can fix it though

it does not install any additional codecs. when i contacted the cameras support department, they said to just install wma and run it in the classic layer and it should work... and that was about the extent of their mac information unfortunately...

one thing i mentioned earlier was that it seemed like vlc was listing the audio codec in the video info, and vice versa.... at least for part of it anyway... might be just a glitch, but it was the only thing i had to go on.

from what i could tell from the ms site... the codecs i mentioned should be supported on the mac.

vlc 0.7.1-cvs for the mac plays the audio although with a few hickups. there is also something that looks like video but it's highly distorted.

this may be due to a problem with msrle setup which we do incorrectly, but i'm not sure. msrle is pretty new if i remember correctly.

And again the fact that both WMP9 mac and mplayer CRASH on it, doesn't really speak for the file. It means at the very least that the file is quite exceptional. When looking at the debug output at first glance, it simply looks like the file isn't occording to the spec as published by MS.

guess there is little hope for ever getting any video from this camera to work in that case. sigh.

Same problem here.

VLC info:

Stream 0

Typ: Ton
Codec: ms
Kanäle: 1
Datenrate: 24000 Hz
Bits pro Beispiel: 4
Bitrate: 96656 bps
Codec-Name: ISO MPEG-4 Video V1

Stream 1

Typ: Bild
Codec: MP4S
Auflösung: 352x288
Codec-Name: IMA ADPCM

WMP 9 / Panther > CRASH
VLC 0.7.1a / Panther > sound is ok, video as mentioned

The camera's readme says:

"Our video clip adopts Microsoft latest [crappy] video technology (Direct X 8.1). Therefore user (Windows 98, 2000) needs to install our enclosed Direct X to playback the video files."

Sounds bad. Another thing: Do you see any chance to make the USB webcam function work? I don't think they're using another codec there. Has anyone ever gotten a non-QuickTime USB webcam to work under Panther?
