Vote here to have scroll wheel & button vol control disabled

Postby kurkosdr » 09 Nov 2011 00:31

Am I the only one that doesn‘t like VLC‘s new “feature“ where everytime you press the volume up button on your laptop, VLC increases it‘s own volume instead of letting the system increase the system volume, as it should? Similar for the volume down button. Com‘ on guys! It‘s good practice to have the application output sound at normal level (100%), and then use the system volume to control the sound level. I don‘t really see a reason for going against this. Can you imagine the average user, having his laptop‘s system volume set to something like 3%, launching a video with VLC and then wondering why the sound doesn‘t increase much , even after pressing the volume up button like 50 times? Instant usability nightmare. I ‘ve seen it happening, and I can tell you the user didn‘t like it.

Another “feature“ that isn‘t liked very much is the ability to change the volume using the scroll wheel. People turn their scroll wheels accidentally all the time, and hence VLC‘s internal volume changes accidentally all the time. The situation with trackpads on laptops is even worse. Again, i can tell you most of my friends that are VLC users don‘t like this. Other media players typically assign more “harmless“ actions to the scroll wheel, like jumping 3 seconds forwards/backwards, or better yet, don‘t assign an action to the scroll wheel.

Both of these features can be disabled from the preferences (btw, i had to disable them manually on all of my friends‘ PCs), so shipping the next version of VLC with them disabled should be really easy. My hope is that if lots of people express their opinion about this, VLC devs will respond to the (well-intended) feedback.

Ok then. I only wanted to make things better. I am hearing lots of real life feedback from people (cousins etc) who find it annoying that when they have their laptop's volume set to something like 3%, and launch a movie with VLC, they can't increase the volume (in a meaningful way) by using the laptop's volume buttons (because the volume buttons increase VLC's internal volume to 200%, which corresponds to having the laptop's volume to 6%), and they have to resort to clicking the little speaker icon on the bottom right to change the volume. I can't find a reason for why VLC should impose such an artificial usability impairment, but if people think it's OK, I am OK with it :)

PS: Is this a trick to get around PulseAudio's volume bug? If so, why not ship the Windows and Mac OS X version with volume buttons control disabled?

YES!
I am struggling right now trying to figure out how to disable my scroll changing my volume every time! I'm on a mac.
This is very annoying! I can't do a skimming in a movie without my volume suddenly poping up or down, due to my fingers not moving perfectly steady.
And I can't find it! It's really frustrating...

If I set "Ignore" in MouseWheel x-axis Control, it also disables the position control!!!
And if I set it to Position, the OTHER axis gets volume control....... grrrrrr
Sorry, but this is stupid. Why is it mandatory to have both or none enabled?
I want my trackpad controlling position with left-right gestures, but ignoring up-down gestures. Is it too much to ask??

Sorry, but when I am in an application, I want it to only control the volume for that application. System volume levels due what they are supposed to do - adjust the volume level for ALL applications. When I increase the volume in VLC, I do not want it to increase the volume of my email notifications, etc.

If you want this as an option, I understand. But an application should ever have it's default behavior to be to modify system-wide settings...

Please have a look at the Vista/7 and PulseAudio audio documentation...

If some people want to turn the wheel off make it an option. I use the mouse wheel to control the volume in VLC all the time.

Where?

I've updated to the latest version, and looked in preferences. Cant find this option. My toddler skipping backwards and forwards in yo gabba gabba with the volume going up and down is driving me freaking crazy. Please can someone give clear directions how to turn this option off?
