Always on top while playing audio

Postby EmperorAtahualpa » 07 Mar 2010 22:22

At the moment it is not possible to have the VLC player "Always on top" when it is playing audio.

Could you please make this possible in the next release? That would be awesome. Thanks!

That's what I was just looking for, too :)
iTunes does really well. They have the mini-player which can be set to be on the top permanently. They also have the taskbar-control-buttons.
One of those in the next release would be cool :)

I was about to third this request, but I see that I can set the VLC system tray icon (in Win 7) to always show (when open) and then access the controls from there. I do like the iTunes and Windows Media Player controls at the bottom of the screen though, and it would be good to have something that matched iTunes in terms of design and integration but without the bloat and endless startup apps and services that it brings with it.

I just created a ticket for this (letting you know so we don't create duplicates ;))

Pity there was such a pathetic response. Ticket was closed. The voluntary developer should at least say he/she doesn't have time and ask for help.
It's such an obvious function.

I cant belive this still prevails?
Such basic functionality/control..

Really nobody else misses the "stay on top in audio mode"?

Or you found some workaround?
Wanted to use VLC for audio playing in the background but i will have to search for some other player:-/

I miss that a lot.
I just don't understand why can't the "always on top" feature be uniform & work across all modes, just like in ANY other media player out there?
Why divide it in "audio mode" & "video mode" in the first place? That's just plain silly...

I'd like the player window to be on top the moment I launch it, even with no files in it at all.
It shouldn't be that difficult to implement. What's the big deal? :/

I tried to use VLC for transcribing audio recording but without the always on top feature for audio files, VLC becomes almost unusable for that purpose.

Please, please, please add this.

Keep up the good work.

YES!
Please oh PLEASE make "always on top" work for the player as a whole.
It's so easy! Just move the feature to the "Interface" section of the Preferences.
There really is no reason to keep it exclusively in the "Video" section.
That would make things so much better for many of us in this otherwise great media player.

This is very needed feature, it is a shame that VLC doesn't have it :( :( :( (yet, I hope).

I found this article with some tools which can help you to keep VLC window on top of the screen, but you have to allow only one instance of VLC (in preferences>interface>playlist and instances) to work properly.

+1 for 'on top while playing'.

Ideally, there should be a second toggle to optionally have the Playlist 'on top while playing' as well.

Personally I find 'always on top' useless since there are plenty of times I have a VLC video half-watched, yet need to do other work on my PC in the meantime. Constantly flipping 'on top' on and off is crazy in a mature app like VLC.

Now 2019 but I have found a "workaround" for this. As the option for always on top is for video only, a workaround would be to use the visualization for your audio as this is technically a "video". I have tested this and it works with applications like full screen games. After enabling the visualization, you can simply click the playlist button, which is next to the repeat button, and you can see your playlist on top.

But every time the song changes it refreshes and auto-resizes the window so you can't keep it small...
