VLC not Scrobbling

Postby Luftmensch » 08 Jan 2013 17:44

Tracks that I play using VLC are not being Scrobbled. Scrobbling works with Spotify, but not VLC. I have enabled Scrobbling in the Preferences ─ both in the Control Interface and the Audioscrobbler sections ─ but it still doesn't work. I'm using Windows 7 (64-bit). I enabled Messages (Verbosity 2), and this is what it showed:

Does this help explain why the feature is not working?

audioscrobbler debug: No track name..
It won't scrobble without a track name. Both artist and track title fields are required to scrobble a track.

Add a track title to the MP3 tag and it should work.

I don't understand. Does that response mean that I can't automatically scrobble what I am listening to on VLC, and have to add each title manually? If that is the case, what is the function of the options in Preferences?

No - you can automatically scrobble using VLC. I just meant that the reason that particular MP3 you tried to play didn't scrobble is because it didn't have proper metadata/tags. Both track title and artist fields are required in order to scrobble the file (part of the Scrobbling API - see here).

Odds are another file that is tagged correctly with a track and artist field will scrobble just fine.

You can edit the ID3 tags in VLC by:
  1. Whilst playing the track, going to Tools >> Media Information.
  2. Enter a track title in the Title field, and (if missing/incorrect) an artist name into the Artist field.
  3. Press Save Metadata then Close.
  4. Stop playing the file in VLC, then press Play again and this time it should scrobble. Going back to Tools >> Media Information should show the tags you just wrote.
If a lot of your files are missing track title and artist fields then you'll need to sort them out (otherwise VLC can't know what to submit).

If you want to do mass tagging then I'd recommend using a different program better suited for that purpose such as Mp3tag or foobar2000.

Cheers, Arite.

That doesn't help. The tracks do have the correct mretadata, but they won't scrobble. Scrobbling only seems to work for tracks I play with Spotify or Lastfm, not for anything I play using VLC.

What do VLC's logs say for a file with correct metadata?
