I think your xmas icon just crashed my machine

I just had a huge system crash. I had to hard reboot my machine. I hadn't done the three-fingered salute in years!
I closed my laptop's lid last night with VLC open. I opened it this morning and tried to start my day, but command-tab didn't work; it just produced a system beep. The Dock didn't work. I couldn't click anything. After a while, command-tab started working again, but there was only one icon in the palate: the VLC xmas icon. (Not even the Finder.) This is despite the fact that all my open apps were still open and visible by dragging windows around. Command-alt-esc didn't work either, it just showed me an empty window. I tried quitting apps manually but that made them hang. after 7-8 minutes of this I had no choice but to hard reboot.
I seriously hope this wasn't due to your xmas icon, because it made me start my morning like a right scrooge.
