solving the Audio distortion problem in VLC 0.8.2 on Windows

for those of you switched audio output module from default to win32 waveout and got no sound, here is the solution that worked for me.
- reset your configuration (just to ensure)
- switch your audio output module to win32
- enable Equalizer 10 bands @ Audio > Filters section
- save and restart vlc

Ok, I am using 0.8.2 and I don't have audio in Preferences/Advanced only CPU Features and Other. I hit Reset All, and the screeching still happens. This has been going on for a long time. Sad, cause VLC used to be my #1 video application.

Same here ... still got horrible loud noise. Using AMD64 with nForce onboard sound.

Problem occured after i replaced my mainboard & cpu ... tried everything like changing output module, reinstalling the whole system and so on ... it just doesn't work. Guess it's a general problem with the chip set or so

seems like I can't use VLC untill the problem gets solved ... guess what? that sux!

Got this problem when I just had upgraded my computer to a AMD64 system with a nForce4 chipset. When I first got the problem I thought that it was a problem with some codecs I just installed and I couldn't remove them properly so I re-installed my OS =S

My audio is really loud and distorted by default (DirectX). If I switch to win32 waveout there is no sound. I really love VLC and would like to see this resolved.

did you try lowering the volume ? (if the volume is between 100% and 200%, it will be amplified and most of the time distorted)

the solution in the top of this topic helps, but at first I was too stupid and didn't find, how the hell the win32 WaveOut must be turned on - and [oalia!] i saw that the "advanced features" were turned off.. then I did everything easily =]] maybe there are more such losers like me? =]]

i solved the problem be deactivating: "use float32-output" at directx and waveout, so i didn't have to change the output-module to win32-waveout...

Win 32 wave out did remove the "noise", but it doesnt play my sound correctly, the sound is just playing random, or it kinda "clip" the sound. I tried the DirectX audio output (instead of the win 32 seting) woks fine now, not perfectly tho, i still hear some strange noises from time to time (small blips) but i can live with that.

when selecting wave out , goto wave out sub menu in the output moduels and uncheck float32 output

I tried everything suggested here and the screeching noise would not go away. But when I updated to the latest version of DirectX the noise was gone and now everything works perfectly. I hope this helps.

Tried comboing all of the above...Even tried two nightly builds...Still no go...No sound unless default is set and then the audio is choppy/broken...What to do? XnView 2.18 plays the same exact AVI files just fine...

First, I lost sound as others complained, then I reset "Output Module" as default and changed "Audio Output Frequency (Hz)" as 48000 in the Advanced Options of Audio. It worked for me.

I was having the same screaching problem with my nforce4 board (Asus A8N SLI Deluxe) util I changed the DirectX (via dxdiag) Sound setting to Hardware Sound Acceleration to Basic Acceleration.

Now everything works well - however, I wonder what I'm missing w/o the "full" accelleration. Hmmm...

This might help some people:

I have a nForce4 Ultra mobo (A64 Socket 939) - Realtek ALC850 codec

When using the Realtek AC97 Codec, all is fine, I only get the distortion when using the nVidia Audio driver.

Anyone with this problem using the Realtek driver just to blow my theory out the water?

Just enabling the Output Module to Win32 made no difference.. the Equalizer 10 bands was the deal breaker.

I'm new to videolan, looks great, thank you.

Also getting a lot of clicking, like a motor (thought it might be the motor in the Sony DVR I'm using via firewire).

Tried the Direct out thing mentioned here, didn't work. Switching to mono works for me, although I realise that this is suboptimal for many things.

Ok, I think its the nForce drvs thats causing the trouble. I use the newer DFI nF4 Ultra D, and since my upgrade the sound got serious distortion. I used a mix of settings for my audio correction:

-reset all
-equalizer 10 bands @ filteropitions
-win32 waveout on "output modules" (advanced [x])
-"Output modules" ---> "DirectX"---> disable "use float32 output" (advanced[x]).

I think this mixture of settings should make some of us happy
