No video thumbnails for .MKV and .FLV

Postby Koetsu » 29 Nov 2012 02:03

So I recently installed VLC for the first time on a rather clean install of Windows 8. My primary intention was to playback FLV and MKV videos. unfortunately, because I had attempted to open them in WMP once, they got a default WMP icon. Upon having VLC open those video types by default, I only get the program icon representing those videos. I've tried all I could about editing and trying to reset the file extensions but nothing works. How can I get my thumbnails to show up for FLV and MKV using VLC?

The thumbnails aren't generated by VLC.
Try this -> http://www.coolmegabytes.com/video-thum ... m-preview/
or install a codec pack (not reccomended IMHO).

Sure, perhaps VLC doesn't generate it, but associating it should have. The files open just fine and using a thumbnail-generating program is last resort

No, it's the only way.

Well surprisingly it didn't do the trick. I still see the cone icon. I was able to reset the extension as well and still no thumbnail. I am literally out of options.

Unfortunately, from what I saw on the support forum, Media Preview is broken on Windows 8 RTM. So you can either keep an eye on the official site for an updated version, or on the support forum. Or if you're a reasoned programmer, offer your assistance.
