Wonder how to get your VLC 2.0 to play encrypted blu-ray discs? Here's how.
You'll need two files: keys database and AACS dynamic library.

Keys database
get the file UPDATED 20-04-2012!
Windows: put it in %APPDATA%/aacs/ .
Mac OS: put it in ~/Library/Preferences/aacs/ (create it if it does not exist)
Linux: put it in ~/.config/aacs/

AACS dynamic library
Windows 32bit: put that file in your VLC directory
Windows 64bit: put that file in your VLC directory
Mac OS: put that file in ~/lib directory (create it, if it does not exist)
Linux 32bit: put that file in VLC folder (or in LD_LIBRARY_PATH, usually /usr/lib/)
Linux 64bit: put that file in VLC folder (or in LD_LIBRARY_PATH, usually /usr/lib64/)
@ anyone having a problem with this issue and vlc 2.0:
Place the keys database in appdata/roaming/aacs
then be sure you are opening the disc correctly!!
go to media>open DISC>under "disc selection" make sure you hit the blu ray button
and under "disc device" select the correct drive!!
then hit play at the bottom.
This worked for me. Hope it helps someone.

You'll have to give more information than that. What message(s) do you get when trying to play a disc? Have you tried with different Blu-rays?

Folks when you go to play a blu ray you need to make sure that the No Disc Menus option is selected before you go to click on the play button.

Afraid I'm running into the same issues, tried everything above (even switching the settings over to Bluray and putting those two files into the required folders, though I hadd to create an AACS folder)

Regardless, this is the error I am getting:
Blu-Ray error:
No valid processing key found in AACS config file.
Your input can't be opened:
VLC is unable to open the MRL 'bluray:///E:/'. Check the log for details.
It references a log, problem is? I can't FIND this log anywhere. Don't suppose anyone knows the issue?

Are you sure you've created it in the right place? Press "Windows Key + R" and type:
%appdata%

And press enter. Then make an "aacs" folder in there, and place KEYDB.cfg inside that folder (so will be %appdata%\aacs\KEYDB.cfg).

If you did all that it could be that that Blu-ray won't work with the current key set or has BD+ protection. Have you tried any other Blu-rays out?
It references a log, problem is? I can't FIND this log anywhere. Don't suppose anyone knows the issue?
In VLC go to "Tools >> Messages" and set the "Verbosity" level to 2. Then try and play a disc and copy/paste the logs here (if the above didn't help).

Aye, did all of that and I did try other BluRays, the same deal I'm noticing.

Hi all, I've followed this thread most of the way through. I have had the same issue with my blu-ray discs.

I want to let you know that I got it to work! I am running Windows 7 64 bit.

I did what someone suggested and downloaded the "experimental" 64 bit version. after instalation, I copied the library file (libaacs.dll) into the new folder (c:/program files/VideoLAN/VLC)
I already had the config file (KEYDB.cfg) in the aacs folder (%appdata%/roaming/aacs)

after all this I started it up, and it worked! I hope this helps.

Found another site, told me what files to get, and where to put them... it never mentioned teh roaming directory, just said appdata/aacs ... tried that, didn't work.
Came here, read previous post, dragged my aacs folder into teh appdata/roaming folder... Bob's your uncle, now watching Teh Thing on blu ray with VLC (latest 64bit experimental build) on Windows 8 64bit!

The Thing... Worked...
Harry Potter : Deathly Hallows... Couldn't find right title to not watch stupid special feature bonus way to view film.
X Men First Class... BD+ fail...

Are we ever going to be able to simply pop in the disc and press play without having to fiddle with all the moving files and folders?

I got it to work on 64-bit Windows 8 by doing the following:

1. Google for the 64-bit version of VLC. As of the time of this writing, I got VLC 2.0.4 from FileHippo: http://www.filehippo.com/download_vlc_64/
2. Install 64-bit VLC
3. Go to http://vlc-bluray.whoknowsmy.name/ and download KEYDB.cfg and the 64-bit version of libaacs.dll.
4. Copy libaacs.dll to C:\Program Files\VideoLAN\VLC
5. Copy KEYDB.cfg to C:\Users\<YOUR_USER_NAME>\AppData\Roaming\aacs

***This step was missing from the other instructions, and it is crucial***
6. Copy KEYDB.cfg to C:\ProgramData\aacs

7. Open VLC, then go to Media -> Open Disc. Under Disc Selection, click the BluRay option. Then select your BluRay drive's letter under "Disc device".
8. Click Play and enjoy!

With my particular movie ("Wanted"), this resulted in three video windows playing at once (the main movie plus "making of" type of stuff). I got rid of the extra ones by right clicking on the video and selecting Video -> Video Track -> Disable. Then right-clicking again and selecting Video -> Video Track -> Track 1.

I hope this helps!

1) Make sure you enable GPU in tools->preferences codecs.
2) Try to open the disk after selecting the Blu-ray option in the media menu.

VLC 2.0.4
Put KEYDB.cfg in ProgramData/aacs
Put KEYDB.cfg in %appdata%/aacs
Put libaacs.dll (64 version) in Program Files(x86)/VideoLan/VLC

Went to Media/Open (Advanced)/Disc/Bluray/No Menus/Selected E drive: Robocop (bluray)

Receive error:

Blu-Ray error:
This Blu-Ray Disc needs a library for AACS decoding, and your system does not have it.
Your input can't be opened:
VLC is unable to open the MRL 'bluray:///E:/'. Check the log for details.

Put the 32bit libaacs.dll in the folder and error message changed to this:

Blu-Ray error:
This Blu-Ray Disc needs a library for BD+ decoding, and your system does not have it.
Your input can't be opened:
VLC is unable to open the MRL 'bluray:///E:/'. Check the log for details.

Unsure where to check the log.
BTW my computer is a 64 bit PC, and VLC doesn't have a 64bit version of their program on their website. Their VLC installs to Program Files (x86)

Put libaacs.dll (64 version) in Program Files(x86)/VideoLan/VLC
This is, of course, wrong. Use the 32bit version.
This Blu-Ray Disc needs a library for BD+ decoding, and your system does not have it.

Thanks guys for your help and instructions and advice. I got it working on Windows 7 64bit.

Question though.....I want to watch the special features on my BD. How do I get to them if I cannot access the menus at all?

Try selecting a different Title (in "Open Disc").

Or when playing the Blu-ray use the Playback menu ("Playback >> Title" etc.) - also accessible by doing a right-click on the video.

Hi,

it still doesn't work for me.

I'm using Windows 8 64-bit

I've tried this with the 64-bit and 32-bit version:

- Uninstall existing vlc and clear registry using ccleaner
- Download and install VLC (I've tried the latest version, some older versions and some experimentals)
- Download the KEYDB.cfg and copy it to: C:\Users\**\AppData\Roaming\aacs
- Copy the KEYDB.cfg to: C:\ProgramData\aacs
- Download the libaacs.dll and copy it to: C:\Program Files\VideoLAN\VLC (I've tried the 32-bit and 64-bit file with each vlc version)
- Start VLC -> Ctrl+D -> BluRay ->No disc menus-> select the right disc device -> Play

I now have version 2.0.5 32-bit installed and I still get some errors :/

Vlc STILL won't play blu rays

Postby at80at » 24 Dec 2012 07:19

Hello.
I'm another one who can't get it to work.
I have 32 bit Windows 7
I have downloaded the latest version of VLC media player and tried to play Blurays
Like many others I was being told I had no aacs library
After several hours going through all 8 pages of this thread (and understanding very llittle of it - I am not a programmer) I believe i have finally downloaded the correct extra files and put them in the correct folders and ticked the right boxes
Now I get this:

Missing AACS configuration file!

and this in the log:
main debug: adding item `(null)' ( bluray:///D:/ )
qt4 debug: Adding a new MRL to recent ones: bluray:///D:/
main debug: rebuilding array of current - root Playlist
main debug: rebuild done - 2 items, index 0

main debug: resyncing on (null)

main debug: no fetch required for (null) (art currently (null))
main debug: using timeshift granularity of 50 MiB, in path 'C:\Users\at80at\AppData\Local\Temp'
main debug: `bluray:///D:/' gives access `bluray' demux `' path `/D:/'
main debug: creating demux: access='bluray' demux='' location='/D:/' file='D:\'
main debug: looking for access_demux module: 1 candidate
libbluray info: First play: 1, Top menu: 1
HDMV Titles: 19, BD-J Titles: 0, Other: 0
main debug: no access_demux module matching "bluray" could be loaded
main debug: TIMER module_need() : 17.131 ms - Total 17.131 ms / 1 intvls (Avg 17.131 ms)
main debug: creating access 'bluray' location='/D:/', path='D:\'
main debug: looking for access module: 0 candidates
main debug: no access module matched "bluray"
main debug: TIMER module_need() : 0.229 ms - Total 0.229 ms / 1 intvls (Avg 0.229 ms)
main error: open of `bluray:///D:/' failed
main debug: dead input
main debug: TIMER input launching for '(null)' : 19.467 ms - Total 19.467 ms / 1 intvls (Avg 19.467 ms)
main debug: changing item without a request (current 1/2)

I've tried several Blurays, all with the same result. Any idea what I might have done wrong?

So - to clarify, you have the 32-bit version of "libaacs.dll" in your VLC directory (normally "C:\Program Files\VideoLAN\VLC"), and KEYDB.cfg located at %appdata%\aacs\KEYDB.cfg. Find these files here.

That KEYDB.cfg location should be:
C:\Users\YOUR_USERNAME\AppData\Roaming\aacs\KEYDB.cfg

Where YOUR_USERNAME is your username.

People have also said it helps to put KEYDB.cfg in C:\ProgramData\aacs too (so "C:\ProgramData\aacs\KEYDB.cfg") - not sure if that's necessary but may make a difference.

Thanks Arite for that succinct reply - I see now what the problem is, but have no idea how to fix it.
A fellow novice asked four pages ago, but recieved no answer:
How do I get my computer to save the lines of text for the Keys Database file as KEYDB.cfg rather than KEYDB.cfg.txt?
Copy and paste just gets me a text file; 'Save as' only gives me options for creating web archives or a text file; 'rename file' just gives me a text file with a different name..
Step by step for me and my fellow idiots:
I've followed the links and now I'm looking at the webpage http://vlc-bluray.whoknowsmy.name/files/KEYDB.cfg
I see a bunch of lines of text - what exactly do I do with it, and how?

Assuming you have known file extensions hidden, you could enable them to be shown in Windows Explorer:

In Windows Explorer, if the Menu bar (File, Edit etc.) isn't shown press the "Alt" key to bring it up. Then go to "Tools >> Folder Options", go to the "View" tab, and then untick "Hide extensions for known file types". Press "OK". You should now be able to see the file extension for all files.

You should be able to right-click on the hyperlink above and do a "Save Target As...", or "Save Link As..." (depending on you browser).

If you're viewing the file in the browser, then you could do a "Ctrl+S" and save it as KEYDB.cfg.

Arite.

On behalf of dolts the world over I thank you, Arite.
So simple when you know how. At last I can take screenshots off Blurays!

Happy New Year!
