Support for Eidos Escape codec (.RPL files)

Postby mark_k » 02 Nov 2012 22:20

Hi,

If anyone is ever interested in adding support for the Eidos Escape video codec...

Several PC games used the Eidos Escape codec, storing video in .RPL files. There's some info about the file format and some small samples at http://wiki.multimedia.cx/index.php?title=ARMovie

A couple of CD-ROMs which came with 1997 issues of the video game magazine Edge also contain a number of .RPL files. VLC seems to be able to play the sound but not the video. I have uploaded archives of the Escape video files from Edge CD 2 and Edge CD 3 to:

(Sorry for not replying sooner!)

I just checked the links and they are working for me now. Could you try again? Note that you might have to register for a (free) 4shared account to download.

If it helps I will also upload the files to multiupload; downloading from there shouldn't need registration. (I'll update this posting with the URLs.)

Multiupload links:

EDGE_CD3_Escape_files.tar.xz (278.88 MB) http://www.multiupload.nl/XQSZW64HYP

Sigh, it looks like multiupload is gone. The 4shared links above should still be valid, but I have also uploaded them to Mediafire (no registration required to download).

I noticed that one of the 2.2.0 features shown at https://www.videolan.org/vlc/releases/2.2.0.html is "Support for THP, Renderware and Escape Replay videogames files". Is that just the container format, not the video codec? Because VLC 2.2.1 still only plays the audio from the Edge CD .rpl files.

Perhaps see:

http://git.videolan.org/?p=vlc.git;a=co ... a6be110888

The video codec seems to be mapped now, but it might be a different version or something.
