setting jump time

I can't seem to find a straightforward answer with clear directions anywhere to how you set the jump time on vlc. Right now when I click the left or right arrows, it only jumps back/forward 3 seconds, but I would like to make it 10 seconds. Also, it only seems to function this way when I am watching in full screen mode. When it is not in full screen mode and I click the arrows, it just goes back to the beginning of the video, which is not what I want either, but this isn't as big of a concern. Most importantly, I would like to know how to change the jump time to longer than three seconds. Thanks.

If you do "Alt + [Left or Right]" it will jump 10 seconds. If you use "Ctrl + [Left of Right]" it will jump 1 minute. Finally pressing "Ctrl + Alt + [Left or Right]" will jump 5 minutes.

However if you want to change the jump lengths and/or hotkeys, in VLC go to:
Tools >> Preferences >> (Select "All" for "Show settings") >> Interface >> Hotkeys settings

You may need to scroll down or expand the dialog box/window a bit to see them but you can change the length of the Jumps. Here's a screenshot:



Press "Save" and the changes should be made next time you play something.

I just came here searching for this solution. However there is one more thing I'd like to know: How do I eliminate the 5 second setback that occurs with all forward jumps? E.g., I now have the "Very Short Jump Forward" set at 10 seconds. However as soon as the jump forward occurs it then jumps back 5 seconds. I would prefer that when I set a jump option that it actually goes that many seconds forward and then stays there. I see no benefit to the "5 second" backward jump that always occurs.

BTW, the 5 second setback also happens with the Jump Forward toolbar icons.

What type of file are you playing? VLC version?

Setting the "Very short" jump length to 10 seconds works fine (both forward and back) for me.

If you're not using 2.0.4 it already try updating to VLC 2.0.4.

I'm using 2.03. And when I click on Help>Check for Updates..., I get a dialog that says "You have the latest version of VLC Media Player".

File type is MP4 video. It jumps forward OK, but then it immediately jumps backward by 5 seconds. And I am talking about using the arrow buttons for jumping forward and backward that are found in the Custom Interface settings. Although the 5 second setback also occurs when I use the hotkeys for jumping.

Forgot to mention that this also occurs when I play DVD files directly in VLC. IOW the folder that contains the VIDEO_TS subfolder containing BUP, IFO, and VOB files. I right click in the folder and then "Play with VLC Media Player".

The "Step forward" and "Step backward" buttons appear to map to the "Short" (not "Very short") jump length - i.e. "Alt + [Left or Right]" (10 seconds by default).

They also seem to work correctly for me; no 5 second backwards jumps.

Just to confim it's not a settings issue you could try clearing VLC's preferences and cache files:
