Hi FlippityWidget,

Have you tried the tests that Edward provided? Do your results match those I reported?

Hi,

Are any of you guys located in the USA? If so, perhaps you can contact Logitech support and see if you can get them to fix the Android build so that the appropriate information, like the build information, is correctly available for applications, like VLC, to use.

Regards,
Ian.

Now what I would appreciate is getting the logcat log from these devices... Also did you try a newer build? https://norsky.no/public.php?service=fi ... 120903.apk

Iansav,
Yes atleast those tests that I could do.

Edwards,

I tried installing term.apk and it force closes when I run it. I have tried all the debug builds posted in this thread except the first one because that link had disappeared. When I try to open VLC it doesn't appear to try to open. The same when I choose it to play a video from ES File Explorer. I installed the sys info for Android apk that you linked to and I got the same results that Iansav got CPU ABI = none and CPU ABI 2 = unknown. I don't know what information those are supposed to be giving you but if it has to do with the type of CPU in the Revue then I can tell you it is a Intel Atom CPU CE4150 @ 1.20GHz.

One thing I have found is that the Revue is supposed to support mkv video natively according to what I have read but it doesn't seem to do so. I'm beginning to wonder if there aren't bugs inherent in the native codecs on the Revue.

Anyway, I appreciate your efforts. What we need is some good ole support from Logitech to help you resolve this. It's sad that they have left us all swinging in the wind after we invested our hard earned dollars in their product.

Hi Edward,

I tried the newer build that you referenced. VLC doesn't run and doesn't leave any logs behind.

Ian.

Hi FlippityWidget,

Where in the world are you located? I am in Australia. We never had an official release of the Revue so I can't contact Logitech for support or to report these problems. If you are in the USA can you see how Logitech responds when you point out the problems to them.

Regards,
Ian.

I agree that the CPU_ABI problem is annoying, but I already worked around that. Now the real problem is that I need the logs from Android's logcat to be able to see what's the real problem of why VLC is not running. Right now I have no technical information to work with regarding the VLC crash.

By the way, did you guys root your Google TVs?

Hi Edward,

My Revue is stock standard.

I am planning to factory default my unit to make sure it is running properly. (My unit had issues during the firmware upgrade when the Logitech servers went offline.)

Ian.

The Revue hasn't been rooted yet without a hardware hack, and I'm not willing to go there. In Canada where I am the Revue isn't supported so I haven't contacted Logitech. I will try the latest APK and see what my machine gives us.

Just tried the VLC-debug-X86-20120903.apk and it did not start run or leave a logcat.

IanSav,

I am in Texas USA. I'll see if Logitech can give us any help. I seriously doubt it because they have dropped support for the Revue but I guess it couldn't hurt to try.

Edwards,
Rooting the Revue is a sketchy prospect at best. From what I have been able to find on the Internet you run the risk of seriously damaging the device. As for getting a logcat, I can't see a way to do that. VLC isn't leaving any logs that I can find unless they are buried somewhere in the system area. I should be able to read files there using ES File Explorer so maybe I'll can do a search from the root for files named similar to the example logs you listed. I think I mentioned in my post above that I think that the codecs are buggy on the revue since it is supposed to support mkv encoded H.264 video but it doesn't.

Anyway, I am off to Logitech land to see what I can find there.

Ok. Contacted Logitech Tech support. they sent me a response with instructions to force close Logitech Player and "TV & Movies", clear data and clear cache on both then reboot the Revue - standard helpdesk script. Needless to say that didn't help. I sent a response yesterday and am awaiting a reply. On their forums it seems that there are a number of issues related to mkv wrapped video ranging from no audio to no playback at all (my problem). I am pretty sure the issue has to do with buggy codecs on the Revue. Logitech doesn't seem to be in a hurry to resolve the issue so I guess we have to hope for some third party to come through for us.

Team VLC we're all counting on you.

Hi FlippityWidget,

Did you mention the system calls that are not returning correct (or valid) values for the processor type?

Also, could you ask them how to run logcat so that we can generate the log reports that Edward needs to debug the problems with VLC.

Regards,
Ian.

I'm not super knowledgeable about Android's guts but would a standard logcat viewer like Alogcat get you what you need? I use it on my Revue to spy on intents that are passed around, sometimes.

I guess you could try it, being open source and all - http://code.google.com/p/alogcat/ I doubt it would hurt at this point, but I've never used it myself so I can't vouch.

Edward, does this give you any pointers? I tried to start VLC twice within this capture window.

Hi Edward,

What does "bother" mean in this context? Is this something you can fix or work around? Is there anything else we can do to help?

Regards,
Ian.

Tye,

How were you able to retrieve that info using alogcat?

I tried running on my Sony GTV but wasn't able to see anything relevant.

It kept reading info about WIFI, etc.

Whenever I tried to run VLC from the latest APK in this thread, then switch back to the logger, I could not see any information like you saw.

I suppose more contributions of information in GoogleTV platforms can't hurt since the ultimate goal is to help the VLC team get the info they need to get this ported.

I also have a working Emulator on my GTV if that could help, but running on a stock Android 3.2 installation, not ready to do any system alterations.

Hi Marinewonder,

That extract was from my GoogleTV box. I simply installed the app, rebooted the Revue and tried to run VLC twice. I then ran aLogcat again and saved the logs. My Revue is also running unmodified production firmware.

Ian.

Well, periodically trying the latest VLC Android nightlies might help. I need to do some more testing when I have some free time.

Hi Edward,

As you requested, from time to time I will try new updates from the nightly archives and update you if anything changes. I would appreciate if you could bump this thread when you have completed your tests and have anything to report or have something specific you would like us to test.

Regards,
Ian.
