video is doing slight frame-pause throughout entire playback

File is (from codec details window):

MPEG-4 Video (XVID), 560x416, Frame rate 25
w/ AC3 audio

The video is playing on a macbook air, i7, plugged in, full screen or not..

the video basically stutters. every ~1.5 seconds there's a slight frame pause. audio continues smoothly throughout.
the playback details do not consider anything wrong, no lost frames or anything

input bitrate and stream bitrate are at about 4000kb/s, but it is variable

thoughts on what could it be? Right now I can't be certain other devices/playback players don't do the same (i.e. video issue itself) but I'm pretty sure this is something the player is doing...

Are you using optical audio output with S/PDIF enabled?

Could you share an excerpt of your file on http://streams.videolan.org/upload? that would be great!

I actually tested on a windows box, and the file has trouble playing in another player (where it basically acts as if the computer can barely keep up stuttering like crazy), so I'm going to blame the file and discard it and do it over.

I have the same problem with HD (1920*X)files running the 9/27/2012 nightly VLC media player 2.1.0-git-20120927-0402 Rincewind

I'm running the file off of a USB 2 7200RPM drive on Windows 8 with a 2nd Gen Core i5 at 1.6GHz and 4GB RAM. The file plays fine in XBMC and in Multimedia 8 but frameskips repeatedly until it finally freezes video for 5s-10s while the audio plays fine. Mutliple HD files exhibit this behaviour. My guess is that VLC uses very poor caching if every other player plays the file correctly.
