I had a good look for the 'none' option in the latest version but had no luck.Set it to None in preferences.
I have tried typing both "None" and "Disable" in the Preferred Subtitle Language of the Subtitles Preference Pane. Neither works.I'd like to second that request.

No, they are in the file itself (Stream 2 according to VLC). MediaInfo doesn't show them however. That's why I included the screenshot from VLC.Subtitles are external?
What can I say You want me to send you a copy of the file?Embedded subtitles in .avi? This is weird.
Whoops! Egg on my face When I went to retrieve the file to send it to you I noticed that there were ".sub" files in the same folder. That's where the Martian subtitles were coming from. So they are not in the avi file. Never the less there remains the issue that VLC plays them by default. Removing them from the folder and/or making them transparent solves the problem although it is a kludge.Sure.
