Subtitles OFF by Default Option

Postby sjcnc » 18 Sep 2012 22:36

I would like a global option or preference for subtitles to be OFF by default when opening a video. As it is, if there is a subtitle track, they automatically display. I have to turn them off individually for every video in the playlist when it opens. This gets to be be a real pain in the butt.

Set it to None in preferences.

I'd like to second that request.
Set it to None in preferences.
I had a good look for the 'none' option in the latest version but had no luck.

I have tried typing both "None" and "Disable" in the Preferred Subtitle Language of the Subtitles Preference Pane. Neither works.

A workaround is to set the subtitle opacity to 0%. But you'll have to remember you did that if you ever want to see the subtitles again :)

By the way, what does "Enable OSD" do? It doesn't seem to make any difference either way. I couldn't find anything about it in the WIKI.

No, they are in the file itself (Stream 2 according to VLC). MediaInfo doesn't show them however. That's why I included the screenshot from VLC.

Embedded subtitles in .avi? This is weird.

What can I say :) You want me to send you a copy of the file?

Sure.
Whoops! Egg on my face :) When I went to retrieve the file to send it to you I noticed that there were ".sub" files in the same folder. That's where the Martian subtitles were coming from. So they are not in the avi file. Never the less there remains the issue that VLC plays them by default. Removing them from the folder and/or making them transparent solves the problem although it is a kludge.

Subtitle track in AVI is possible and multiple tracks, too. I think that it worked when I tried it in the past.
