Encapsulation

I am unable to use the conversion from various sources to audio only because I have no idea what the word Encapsulation means, let alone to pick one. It would be useful to have a pop up explanation. In this forum, I searched for the word Encapsulation and many things appeared, none of which was an explanation of what the word meant or how to choose. You folks appear way to high up on the intelligence scale, so its all about selection etc, but I am a dummy and just want to know what that means and how to make selection correctly. So, a simple popup of that information would have helped me to use this VLC player to make conversions. The related articles I found never even mentioned that, as if one just knows what to put. Well, I do not know that. Thanks
