Why won't the programme transcode as I ask it to?
Everything esle seems OK.

Mac OS - ASF to MPEG2 Transcode

Postby Lord Eclipse » 16 Aug 2005 23:46

Hi,

I have tried searching but I'm getting an SQL error. I don't know if it's from Safari or from the server. So I hope I don't make too many enemies by asking questions that may be deep within the forum already.

I'm using a PowerMac G3 running Mac OS X 10.3.9 with 512 MB RAM. I have tried using VLC 0.8.1, 0.8.2, and 0.8.4-svn. I have received the following error from the first two:
ffmpeg: cannot open encoder
stream_out_transcode: cannot find encoder
ffmpeg: cannot open encoder
stream_out_transcode: cannot find encoder
stream_out_transcode: cannot create audio chain
main: cannot create packetizer output
and the following error from .4 with the Wizard:
ffmpeg: cannot open encoder
stream_out_transcode: cannot find encoder
ffmpeg: MPEG audio doesn't support frequency=8000
stream_out_transcode: cannot find encoder
stream_out_transcode: cannot create audio chain
main: cannot create packetizer output
I remember installing ffmpeg along with several other items that ffmpeg asked for at the time. Do I need a newer version? I thought it was more of a GUI to the command line apps. Is it possible that VLC doesn't know where to find ffmpeg? Can I tell it where to find it? Do I need to reinstall it? Etc, etc.

Try resetting your configuration.

But i think you just didn't select the proper encoding options.

Config Reset

Postby Lord Eclipse » 19 Aug 2005 19:40

What do you mean by resetting the configuration? Delete the configuration file? I've tried default output, played with changing the output, and used the wizard to create output options. The results are always the same.

How does VLC know where ffmpeg is? Maybe I need it in a path or something? Is there something from the terminal I can do to verify that what I need is where it's supposed to be?

I'm having similar problems for transcoding (win32). Reseting the configuration does not help. Nor does any other switch I tried.

The log reports strange fps the encoder does not support. I attached a log where I tried to transcode a MPG4 AVI to an MPEG2 TS Stream with the win32 version from http://vthr.via.ecp.fr - my own cygwin compile using the contrib libraries (which are quite old) does the same so I guess not ffmpeg is the problem. MPEG1 to MPEG2 transcode seems to work, though.

I have exactly the same problem as above.
VLC 8.2-test1 worked great but, final release of 8.2 has problem and also beta versions of 8.3 have the same problem.

I tired to change the configuration ( Advanced options ) but nothing obtained.
I changed the encoding bit rate to values lower that 394kbps but again nothing came out.
if i disable transcoding every thing works well however, there can not be any network stream.

the message of "Unsupported frame rate" is a joke, the value which is show is exactly one of the very popular available frame rates.

thanks.
