VLC video/sound freezes after 1-3 seconds

Hi there,

I setup my computer clean from scratch and I (of course) installed VLC media player 1.1.11.
Specs:
- Windows XP 32-bit SP3 all patches installed
- graphics card: ATI Radeon 9800 XT
- additional software: AVG Antivirus 2012, Firefox 9.0.1, Dropbox, Catalyst Control Center, .NET 2.0

Now I have the problem that EVERY video/sound file freezes after 1-3 seconds completely.
The video stops and the sound hangs.
Most of the time after freezing CPU usage by VLC is 100%.
Affected by this problem are all videos/sounds I tried, no matter what type (mpg, divx, mp3) or size (200k, 1.4GB).

I installed the latest Catalyst video drivers. The device manager shows no hardware problems.

What I tried:
- different versions of VLC: 1.0.0, 1.1.9, 1.1.11, 1.3.0 (latest nightly build) installed with default settings
- removing %APPDIR%/vlc
- setting video thread from 0 to 1
- playing video without sound
- playing mp3 file

Nothing I tried made any difference: the videos and/or sounds kept freezing

I tried to play the MPG video and mp3 audio file with Windows Media Player and it worked without any problem (video and sound).

I don't want to forgo the VLC because it is one of my top 10 applications.

Does it work better if you use only the command-line interface? Or skins2 interface?

I tried it with alternative skin and command line:
vlc --verbose=2 --intf rc
add q.mpg

Same result as with standard skin: VLC freezes after some seconds.

I'm not sure if this is a driver issue.
It would be my first guess but why is the Windows Media Player able to play all the files correctly?
My next step will be to enable/disable devices selectivly in the device manager in order to find out if a certain device is the troublemaker...

Because VLC and WMP don't use same codepath. So certain features might work with one device driver, but other features might cause issues.

I tried it with audio card disabled, with video card disabled (only on board graphic) but no difference...VLC keeps freezing.
Any ideas what I could try else?

Getting the exact same issue. VLC is up to date, this is also a fresh install of Windows, all drivers up to date. Resource monitor shows 100% highest active time for hard drive during the freezing, and all disk activity is empty EXCEPT for VLC.

During this freeze, my computer is essentially useless, cant open things, can't even minimize windows.
