Suddenly can't play MKV files

Suddenly I can't play any MKV files anymore. I had no problems two days ago, but yesterday it stopped working.
I've tried to uninstall, delete all files, reinstall and choose to reset all settings during the install, and it still doesn't work.
The same file plays (albeit choppy) on other players, and works perfectly in VLC on another computer.

Anyone that have had the same or a similar problem and knows how to solve it?

Try another video output module:

You can also try to enable or disable some video options such as Overlay and/or Hardware YUV -> RGB conversions.

Default gives no sound nor video, and the seek bar/elapsed time doesn't progress at all.
Windows GDI works, but it it slightly choppy, and there are lots of colour artefacts.
OpenGL works, but is extremely choppy.
DirectX gives the same results as Default
Direct3D gives the same results as Default
Direct2D gives similar results as OpenGL

Enabling Hardware YUV-RGB conversion didn't work and neither did turning Overlay off. In both cases video and sound started, and then the video froze after two-three seconds.
(I only tried this with the Default video output module)

I also have to kill the vlc.exe process from Task Manager whenever VLC unsuccessfully tried to play an MKV file and I closed the player.

Could you paste the verbose logs tools->messages set verbosity to 2 and then start playback (from stop mode not pause).

I have used the default settings for the following:
I can neither stop nor pause the video after I have opened it. I can click the buttons, but nothing happens, and the pause buttons never changes to a play button regardless of what I click.

Well you could try to enable GPU decoding (save and restart vlc).

Unfortunately your logs don't tell much all my MKV work fine, if you had a problem with one file or one set of files I could ask the file to see what's the problem but if it's all your files, even the one that used to work, that are broken then well I have no solutions. Do other containers (AVI,mp4,wmv) work?

Even stranger is that I reinstalled Windows recently, and I still can't play the files... Though after more testing it seems to be just a couple of files, namely an anime called Michiko e Hatchin. Sadly I don't have the original filenames, so I don't know which group made the rip and encoding. And each episode is over 1GB, so it's a bit hard to send it...

I decided to do some more tests, so I installed VLC 2.0.3 and tried different output modules. This time it seems like OpenGL works. I've only tried a couple of minutes of a single episode, but during that time it worked flawlessly. Other output modules still freezes all controls, or is choppy.
The issue is solved for the moment, but if others have tips and ideas on why this occurred in the first place, and how to solve it, I would be very grateful.
