How to DISable logging

Postby Chrisi22 » 23 Jun 2012 16:21

After starting logging, I can't seem to disable it.
When 1st enabled it, in Tools>Preferences>Advanced>Logging, I set verbosity = 2, then in View, clicked Messages (in VLC 2.0.1, no check mark appears by "Messages" to show it's enabled / disabled).

Can't turn off logging or stop the messages window from popping up every time VLC starts. Every time start VLC - even if not playing a file - the message window pops up briefly w/ new data being written - to the screen & to log file. That message window then minimizes to the status bar in a separate icon. I tried resetting verbosity to different values, but doesn't affect it - as far as disabling logging.

Is it broken in v2.0, something I'm missing or is there a command line switch to turn it off (I found nothing in Wiki)?

BTW, if I close the "message window" icon in app status bar, it closes the VLC program also. Probably shouldn't do that.

Thanks.

Easiest way is to reset VLC settings by removing %appdata%\vlc folder. IIRC some nightlies start automatically with logger.

As said, this is 2.0.1. Holy c***. Delete all my customizations just to stop it from logging? Must be an easier way.

It would be VERY nice if the config file was text, instead of a bunch of numbers, so users could find / fix problems like this.

Actually, after setting the verbosity = 0 in Preferences/Advanced/Logging, I see it's not writing anything to the log file except the line:
"main: Running vlc with the default interface. Use 'cvlc' to use vlc without interface." - each time VLC starts.

But the extra app icon label in status bar for the logging window ACTUALLY says "D:\Programs Files (x86)\VLC\vlc.exe"
If I click that icon, it opens a "command prompt - like" window w/ SOME debugging info, that doesn't get written to the log file.

BUT... if I CLOSE that icon, it shuts VLC down. Very strange - in task manager, in Applications tab, there is a "VLC media player" entry & a "D:\Programs Files (x86)\VLC\vlc.exe" entry. But, if I click "go to process" on both entries, they lead to the same ONE vlc running process.

The fact that the 2nd icon appears in status bar & will close the media player as well as the debug screen is probably a bug.

Config files (vlcrc and qt4 stuff) are text files. You can edit them with text editors.

Thanks. In part, I meant toolbar customizations. They are stored in vcl-qt-interface.ini & are just a bunch of numbers representing values & customizations.

However, in a round about way, you helped me find where the value is stored to start the logging process w/ each file played. Though there's a prefs option to stop saving the log output to file, doesn't seem to be one to stop the logging window.

That value seems to be in the vlcrc file: "file-logging=1 "
I changed the value to 0 & logging window no longer appears when VLC starts.

thank you for pointing that out, i thought that making that option in the preferenses menu blank would set that valiable to 0 like so: "file-logging=0 ". Maybe its a bug?
full filepath for windows:

Code: Select all

%appdata%\vlc\vlcrc
