Why is it that vlc is unable to mux to mp4 and webm while serving a stream?

vlc starts streaming anyway but when i open the mp4 stream in another instance of vlc it says the following:

The orignal stream used as input is video only, but for some reason it finds a mp3 format in the stream and says something about undf(undefined) fourcc.

Any particular reason why muxing a stream to mp4 or webm is not posssible and wil this be supported in the future?

The streams were started by using the gui,

Why isnt vlc able to mux to mp4 on anything but mux to file?
I'm trying to stream a live stream which is playable with the html5 video tag and ogg/theora doesn't give me good enough compression, so i would realy like to see mp4 muxing while streaming possible.

Pretty much anything other than file requires a "streamable" format, i.e. something that the receiver can pick up and sync from any point. With this in mind, MPEG Transport Stream is mostly the only adequate format. I guess ASF works too (not sure).

MP4, OGG and MKV (WebM) definitely won't work. The whole output architecture would have to be rethought. That would be a HUGE amount of work, so it's not going to happen by whining on the forum. You are most welcome to sponsor a developer or do it yourself and send the patches.

I'm not asking for anyone to make mp4 live streaming possible, I'm only trying to get a clear answer as i only got partial ones so far.
According to wikipedia(http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MPEG-4_Part_14) the mp4 file format does support streaming over the internet so what you probably mean is it doesn't support live streaming.

If asking for some clarification is called whining on the vlc forum then why have a forum at al.

Actually, it is possible. You see this company, Flumotion, did it almost immediately after webm got open-sourced. I'm guessing they do something *really* complex like just paste a header in when the client connects... I'm with the above poster, why be so snarky to people trying to learn about your software!?

Is there actually a way to stream a video file over http?? Exactly my point. However, streaming requires some major rethinking of the code. I think, that the vlc guy's sort of got caught on the wrong food - with all those new protocols emerging almost every day.

Hmm... vcodec=mp4v, acodec=mp4a doesn't play well with mux=ts. Doesn't even work with mplayer ( .. Cache not filling, no audio-sync, stuttering). Sorry.

I dont think so, have same issue, wanted to send http live stream to html5 webpage, but no luck..
