Screen Record only part of screen with VLC?

I noticed that for mac's you can record just part of the screen with "open capture device"
It seems I can only record the entire screen with vlc in windows

also, vlc doesnt seem to have something that allows for compression...i dont want the resulting files to be like 32GB or something.
i actually dont even see a button that allows me to specify where I want to save the recorded video file...

please help?

It can, but you need to do it in preferences.

could you be more precise? I cant seem to find where to input the specific area I want to record. I can't even find where the recorded files end up (as in which directory)

The "Record" button should by default send files to %USERPROFILE%\Videos (or "My Videos").

As for changing the area of the screen to capture - go to:
Tools >> Preferences >> (Select "All" for "Show settings") >> Input / Codecs >> Access modules >> Screen

And change the "Subscreen left corner" and "Subscreen right corner" to pick the top-left corner of the recorded section, and "Subscreen width" and "Subscreen height" to input the desired size.

You can also get it to follow the mouse by checking "Follow the mouse".

In order to record a working video you might need to increase the framerate to something like 25 fps.

Thanks Arite i`ve also been playing with record screen function, can u tell me if i can screen capture with sound? perhaps from the line in on the sound card, i`m on VLC 1.8.
I currently have a method but involves using direct show Uscreencapture, which gives good sound but ok picture. The result is not as good as VLC`s internal module. appreciate any advice thxs,

I'd recommed updating to the latest version of VLC (2.0.1) as there have been a lot of improvements since 1.1.x (version 1.8 doesn't exist... presumably you mean 1.1.8 ).

If you're able to capture audio through Stereo Mix (or Mono Mix) then you might be able to using DirectShow. Or microphone if you want to record that way.

It seems input slave doesn't work very well/is broken so difficult to sync up audio and video. A crude method is to record video and record audio (using DirectShow - select "None" for video device and your desired audio device for audio) in a separate instance of VLC. Then you could sync them up later. FYI if the "Record" button is pressed and it's audio only the files are stored in %USERPROFILE%\Music ("My Music") instead.

You might be able to do something with the bridge module. There's more discussion on the topic here:

Thxs yeh, the Stereo mix in win7 dont work with my realtek ingrated soundcard,i thought about recording sound separate and synching it up in editing thats probably the best solution.
Ive had to resort to VLC 1.1.8 as the h264 recording function is broken in 2.0.1 twoflower.
The x264 encoding in VLC is my favorite feature, i havent seen any other screen capture software thats able to record in x264.
Currently i have to loop the soundcard line out into line in, for use with uscreencapture filter into VLC
I came across a handy looking directshow app, to make a virtual stereo mixer for win7r called stereomixplus but VLC didnt recognize it, or i hadnt set it up properly.

How could anyone know the coordinate of the top-left corner, as well as the width and height of the region they want to record? There should be a tool that allows users to drag a box around the area they want to record. Every other screen recording program I've tried has such a feature.
