Try another video output module:
http://wiki.videolan.org/WindowsFAQ-2.0 ... _output.3F

And/or disable/enable GPU acceleration:

http://wiki.videolan.org/WindowsFAQ-2.0 ... age_errors

If it still doesn't help try these:

I recently encountered the same problem as described by the original post. I had been using VLC 2.01 for some time without problems, so I knew it wasn't VLC. Initially, I thought it had something to do with the specific .mkv file but ruled that out when I had the same problem with another one. Once I read the information concerning alternate video output modules, I was able to fix the problem by changing Preferences -> Video Settings -> Output explicitly to OpenGL (it was previously set to Default).

Once things were working again, I realized I had probably caused the problem. Not long ago, I uninstalled ATI's Catalyst Control Center. I'm guessing that this affected the video output default in VLC. FWIW, my machine is running Windows 7 Pro SP1 (x86) and has an ATI FirePro M7740 video adapter, but this might affect any machine with an ATI adapter.
