msi installer

Postby alexchevrier » 17 Jun 2009 15:05

Hi,
I'm a computer technician at the commission scolaire de la Vallée des Tisserands and we use VLC player on about all of our computer (2500+), which run on Windows 2000, XP and Vista.

We ghost our schools computers about every summer for software updates, but I started last year to deploy .msi thru AD instead of ghosting.

I did an msi for vlc, but I'm not satified with the results... I have some problems with file associations.

We don't use scripts for installations because students have user rights on computers, we cannot give them rights to install softwares.

It would be great if you could provide an msi installer format for VideoLAN... I saw one post about it in the forums, but I thought that I should give my thoughts and argmunents about this... A msi configured by an mst saves us a lot of time and lets us install softwares with the settings we need.

Thanks,
Alexandre Chevrier.

Well, as usual, patches are welcome.

I don't know anyone on the team that will work on this .

Does anyone have knowledge how to create MSI packages?
I've searched a bit for possibilities how to create MSI packages from NSIS scripts but couldn't find something useful.

If anyone finds a tool to do it, I'd be willing to write a short howto here - maybe the devs could include this into their release process then and create additional MSI packages, too.

An MSI package of VLC would be very very useful - I need to deploy it in a corporate environment through AD and MSI is the only proper way to do it here.

An opensource toolkit to create installers incl. support for MSI packages:
http://wix.sourceforge.net

Let's see if this helps us in any way...

The same issue at viewtopic.php?f=7&t=46927&p=148863
I understood that the problem with MSI is that there are no OSS for that. Well, what about that WiX which is now hosted at http://wix.codeplex.com/? Can people from VLC use it to prepare MSI? Or anyone else who uses it regularly?

You have my vote for an official .MSI that allows disabling of autoupdate/desktop icon/etc!
