Sound cuts out temporarily near beginning of video

Was wondering if anyone could identify why VLC 2.0.1 (happens to be on an Intel Mac) ocassionally skips sound. I'm wondering if it's to do with where a video file has been edited. Something seems to happen with audio codecs, but I don't really understand.
