VLC doesn't play anything properly

Postby flashy714 » 17 Apr 2012 14:37

Sorry for a new thread, folks.

I recently installed the latest (2.0.1) version of VLC and it won't play anything at all (stuttering video and audio).

I uninstalled and went to 2.0.0; same thing.

I can't play an mp3, an m4a, or a .vob file without the audio stuttering and video, too.

Again, sorry to bother you all, but if you tell me what you need to follow up on my request, I'll follow instructions and hopefully get VLC working again for me.

Does it persist if you turn off time stretching in the audio preferences (and restart)? Does it persist if you play an audio file with another sample rate (48kHz instead of 44,1kHz or vice versa)? Does it persist if you turn off power management on the computer? What's your VLC audio output plugin (Ctrl+M then "modules tree")?

Wow, thanks for such a quick response!

I turned off the time stretching in the audio preferences; restarted VLC a few times and got it to work perfectly with a few different types of files. Voila, fixed!

Well, then it stopped being fixed and went back to playing the same way it did before.

I cannot adjust any Power Management settings on this computer (it's a company-owned machine at work, but I see it does not hibernate, sleep, or turn off hard drive ever).

I'm sorry, but I don't know the sample rate of any files I'm attempting to play, but I tried many different files and file types from different sources attempting to hit different rates...none of the files played properly.

Lastly, I tried to post a shot of what I got when I did the CTRL-M, then Modules Tree...but I have no way to get my image online from here at work (sorry!).

Well, in the meantime, I just inserted an Audio CD...VLC played it properly, then I tried to play other files and they did not work, and the Audio CD will not play again, I have an intermittent problem!

If you don't answer questions, then there is no point in asking for help.

Sorry.

See answers below:

Does it persist if you turn off time stretching in the audio preferences (and restart)?

Yes, as I mentioned, it seemed to fix the problem, but the problem recurs.

Does it persist if you play an audio file with another sample rate (48kHz instead of 44,1kHz or vice versa)?

Yes, as I mentioned, I have no way of knowing the sample rate of files I have on my computer to play, but I've tried it with a wide variety of files, and the problem abates and recurs with the same individual files.

Does it persist if you turn off power management on the computer?

As I mentioned, I have no way to turn off Power Management on this computer, but I will note any further settings if you need to know if some are specifically turned on/off.

What's your VLC audio output plugin (Ctrl+M then "modules tree")?

When I open VLC and CTRL-M, the Messages window comes up, on its Modules Tree tab are the following entries:
libvlc main (0x473f38)
Interface qt4 (0xe17cc8
Generic lua (0xe2b178)
Interface globalhotkeys (0xe11210)
playlist (0xe09738)

Is that the info you need regarding VLC audio output plugin, or is there somewhere else you need me to check in VLC for further info?

Again, thanks for the reply!,

Hmmmm, I had posted the other day; and never received a reply...did I not respond fully enough to get a further post?

Remi,

Maybe you missed my post, I thought I had fully answered the questions you had asked in my post on Tue Apr 17, 2012. Let me know if you need specific further answers.

Is there anything further you need from me?

I'm still having trouble on this machine getting VLC to work consistently.
I have filees that will play "sometimes", but not others.

Thanks in advance for your support,

I don't have the time and the strength to hold the hand of every VLC user. You avoided the questions instead of answering them. I cannot help you.

I use VLC at home on my main computer, on my laptop, and on my wife's netbook. I've been in love with it.

The problem is with the desktop computer I'm provided with at work. I've reinstalled and deleted cache and preferences...but still can't get it to work.

I thought I had made a good faith effort at receiving support, and at helping the developers solve a problem...but I have to assume that perhaps there's a language barrier where the support agent is misreading my responses to the questions asked.

Oh well, I'll move on from VLC here at work (but will continue to suggest it as a good alternative to WMP!).

Thanks again,

@remi denise-courmont

I do believe flashy714 answered all your questions to the best of his abilities considering he obviously said he was on a work computer! Your rudeness is crass and obnoxious to say the least when someone was purely asking for help! I too have the same issues with vlc as do many others! WE would appreciate a response from someone who isn't blatantly rude and on some kind of power trip who can actually provide us with some real help! Thanks...

Sounds like you know more about doing support!

Please donate your free time to this project to deal with the intricacies of users that can't don't understand what is being asked of them from developers!

I agree completely!

So, clearly you who isn't on a power trip will be fully willing to contribute your free time to the matter without any issue of needing that free time to work on other things when a user is not understanding what you request!

That solved it for me. Now, I don't think that will be a solution, rather a workaround. When can we expect a release of VLC that doesn't trip over bad/broken power management? Obviously there's other media players out there that are happily working with/ignoring the broken stuff?

I too have this same problem.
I have tried the advice given but this doesn't work. VLC always used to work but now it doesn't. I recently re installed windows, but have not made any hardware changes. My power management is set to never do anything but stay on with monitor set to never turn off. I too have used a variety of different files all of which have the same effect.

I personally feel that the responses given to this poor user where very rude indeed. Not everyone is technically minded and your product is supposed to be for people that want to play video files easily and simply, not necessarily technicians. the point is the software should just work and the fact that many people are having this problem indicates to me that it is a problem on your side within the programming. Whilst i love VLC I have been trying to fix it now for some time and If i cant fix it soon I am very tempted to use a different product. I am very surprised after the abuse that was given to the first poster in this thread that he is graciously still using the software at home when he could have switched to using something else, If I was spoken to in that way directly I would have switched. Do the other developers know how rude their support staff are?
