Controlling VLC thru the mobile phone to make presentations

Postby MrMister » 29 Apr 2012 07:17

Hello
My proposal comes from the global hate that many people have to use PowerPoint.

PowerPoint is bored.
PowerPoint fail.
PowerPoint sucks.

The last day I saw a video from a M.I.T. professor saying PowerPoint is boring... here you can take it a look...
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wcXSpXyZVuY
I'm against powerpoint... and all people clapping !

Did you know there is a political party in Switzerland with one goal in mind? To ban powerpoint from the planet, because it is boring.

Okay I was thinking VLC can be used as a presentation tool. Here is my proposal.

Let's forget texts, let's forget transitions, let's forget everything.
In a movie we have all that, so to present the movie we don't need that. To put text transitions and all that stuff I have a good video editing Software as Premiere or Vegas.
How many transitions do you see in a Hollywood movie? zero. Basically there are no transitions in Hollywood movies... so to present well we need:

1. A good player
2. A good way to control that player
3. Repeat tool
4. Play list.

Okay, VLC has 3 of those features. It is a good player (1), It has a repeat tool (3), and it has a good play list control (4).
BUT! We still needing a good way to control it.

My idea is: CONTROLLING VLC THRU YOUR MOBILE PHONE TO MAKE A PRESENTATION.

Let's imagine this situation.

You are on the stage... the public is in front of you, all people is watching. Behind you, there is a big screen, like those you have in Apple events.
A laptop is runing VLC Media Player
In VLC media player we have 20 movies in the play list.
Now the audience is in front of us.

Okay, we talk to the public... and then we grab our cell phone.
In the cell phone we have a little client program that communicate via wireless with the laptop where I have VLC Media Player. The laptop is reproducing the video in a giant screen with the projector.

Now I grab my cell phone where I have the VLC MOBILE PHONE CLIENT SOFTWARE - to control - VLC MEDIA PLAYER.
That client software has a very little interface.
Play Stop << >> Pause and a list of all the videos we have in our play list.

Here is how it works:
Image

1. The VIDEOLAN CLIENT SOFTWARE (in the mobile phone) connect with VIDEOLAN MEDIA PLAYER in a PC or a LAPTOP
2. The laptop is running VIDEOLAN MEDIA PLAYER and it is connected to a projector, like in this picture:

3. BECAUSE VIDEOLAN CLIENT SOFTWARE CONNECT WITH VIDEOLAN MEDIA PLAYER... I can control the presentation with my mobile phone.
I don't have to go to touch the keyboard showing my back to the audience... or moving away from the stage... I just have my mobile phone and I press play... first video of the play list is played... I want to pause? press pause, etc.

The best of all this is the total freedom, because I have my playlist... I can chose the video I want to show first. So if I don't want to start with the Event Introduction and jump directly to Sales 2011 I just press over the video, and bingo... it is played.

No one tried this before.
This simple idea could revolutionize the presentations world, because no one tried this before. It is a very simple and easy tool, extremely powerful to master presentations.

Basically the idea is that from your mobile phone, you be able to control the VideoLAN Media Player that is in a Laptop, using WIFI. Then, the mobile phone acts like an intelligent remote control, giving you total access and total power to control the way videos are shown.

I want to share the idea with the VideoLAN team, because I think it has a lot of possibilities and it would make VideoLAN be a STANDARD IN presentation tools world and videoplayer worldwide.

Use VLC and the web interface for that.
