2.0.1 won't play videos, but 1.1.0 will

Postby ZapGuy » 24 Apr 2012 03:43

I have been trying to use "Version 2.0.1 Twoflower (Intel 64bit)" to play a 35 second video that has been saved as .ASF (5.5 MB) and resaved as .mp4 (6.2 MB).

Audio files play OK.
Trying to play any Video makes the application quit.
Trying to display any picture makes the application quit.
Trying to add a Video to the playlist makes the application quit.
Clicking on the "Open media..." button, and selecting a file, makes the application quit.
No warning, no error messages, no "...has unexpectedly quit." message.
I think I can -almost- see a blink of a red stopsign in a dialog box. But it disappears so fast, even using quicktime to record my screen won't catch it.

I have deleted the preferences, as noted in many other message threads.
I have reset the preferences, using the "reset all" button in the application.
I have restarted my computer.
I have said many carefully chosen words that are NSFW and would probably get me banned from the messageboard.

None of those solutions are working.

I have re-installed VLC 1.1.0 from an installer that was sitting in my downloads folder.

VLC 1.1.0 and QuickTime will play the files fine.

What should I try next?

Thank you for the help.
I read through that thread and it looks like it suggested switching resolution.

I wasn't sure if this meant in the System Prefrences or in the VLC App, so I tried both. It didn't fix or change anything.

But when I changed the VLC Preferences Output module to Mac OS X OpenGL..., I could hear the audio in the video file, and this error is displayed:
Video output is not supported
Your Mac lacks Quartz Extreme acceleration, which is required for video output.

It also suggested downloading a nightly build.
I downloaded "vlc-2.1.0-x86_64-20120421-0115.zip". (Version 2.1.0-git Rincewind (Intel 64bit))

It displays this error message:
OpenGL acceleration is not supported on your Mac
Your Mac lacks Quartz Extreme acceleration, which is required for video output. It will still work, but much slower and with possibly unexpected results.

...but this version will play video files now.

Yup, similar findings here. 2.0.4 plays swimmingly, but the warning
message comes up every time.

Hey, yeah, speaking of error messages...is there a plist edit or
something I can do to keep the
  • OpenGL acceleration is not supported on your Mac...
warning message from coming up every time? There's nothing
about that that I've been able to find in VLC's prefs, nor
anywhere in the forums. Thanks.
