No Audio after Video Conversion

Postby leed » 22 Apr 2012 15:10

I have a problem, using the VLC convert function for videos. I use the Software on Windows, Mac and Linux Systems and experience the same problem on all Systems

Every time I convert a Video into another format, the pictures is in most cases great, but the audio is always gone. I'm no expert in choosing which audio format matches
to what video format, but I also don't think that is the problem. I guess there is some setting I'd need to make before convert/streaming videos, but I just can't figure out
what it is.

Can someone help?

Some containers cannot hold certain formats. For example, MP4 doesn't support PCM audio.

I normally try wav, mp3 and aac.

The Formats I try to convert to are avi, mp4,Webm,ogg.
I use the convert/save feature in vlc

I have no experience with the VLC converter, but the first step I would take would be to see if an audio stream is actually being written to the file. Play the file and look at the file information to see if there is an audio stream. Then troubleshoot from there.

Tell us what you are exactly trying to achieve, e.g. converting an AVI with an Xvid video track and an MP3 audio track to MP4 with H.264 video and AAC audio.

Also open Tools -> Messages (set Verbosity to 2) before you start the playback and then paste the full resulting log here or on Pastebin.com if it's too long.

Also upload a short sample of a problematic resulting file to either http://streams.videolan.org/upload/ or to MirrorCreator.com or to EmbedUpload.com, so it will upload the file for you to several other hosts, and then post the link to the file here.

There are several things I'm doing...

One thing is trying to get the mkv File my camcorder makes into Format I can put on my NAS and then stream to my Xbox

Another thing is that I would also like to start using HTML5 Players online to embed my videos. VLC seems to have excellent prerequisites
to convert the Videos into OGG+Theora, H.264 and WebM/VP8 and it all runs under Linux, so I don't need to boot windows and install some
video programs that all try to take over my whole system.

The strange thing is, if I convert a video to mp3 I get the sound, it's only when converting to a video format, that the audio stream is missing

Thanks for the Tip with the Verbose Messaging.

I managed to get my first video converted with sound after googling some of the error messages. It seemed that all I needed to do is uncheck the "keep original audio track" option in the sound settings. That way VLC converts the sound instead of trying to embed the the original.

Cool, thanks a lot for your help.

Hi all

Similar problem...I am converting a .mkv file to .mp4, and the video comes out fine - but no audio. Unfortunately, the "keep original audio" tickbox is already unchecked, so I'm at a loss...perhaps I need to set a different Codec, bitrate, channels, or Sample Rate? Following is the Messages output when I set Verbosity to "2":

Hello,

I am also having an issue when converting a DVD to MP4. The video looks great, but there is no audio. I"m not sure what the problem is.
It's a basic DVD with audio files and video files.

THE FIX: This is a common problem that can be solved by ensuring that the conversion audio bitrates matches.

Open file you wish to convert. While file is playing, under Tools, select Codec information. For notice the audio bit rate.

When you make the conversion, under settings, make sure the audio bit rate you're converting to matches.

For whatever reasons, VLC doesn't automatically downgrade audio bit rate. So if your original audio bit rate is 48000 and your audio setting is set at 44100, VLC would generate a converted file without audio!

Good luck!

THE FIX: This is a common problem that can be solved by ensuring that the conversion audio bitrates matches.

Unfortunately this did not help, same bitrate and still no audio track at all within the converted file.

the problem lies in the audio files. to solve this simply change the audio file sample rate format to 48000 hz by clicking on the customize tab. next change the codecs to MPEG 4 (AAC). this will add the duel audio during your conversion bruh.

Hi all

I'm also having problems with audio when converting my old .avi files to MP4. The video stream converts just fine.

I'm running on MacOS 10.14.4 (Mojave), and using VLC 3.0.6 Vetinari.

The media information window in VLC shows the source .avi file has the following settings:

Stream 0
Codec: H264 - MPEG-4 AVC (part 10) (avc1)
Type: Video
....
Stream 2
Codec: PCM S16 LE (s16l)
Type: Audio
Channels: Stereo
Sample Rate: 48000 Hz
Bits per Sample: 16

For the conversion, I've tried the standard Profile "Video - H.264 + MP3 (MP4)". This results in no audio.

Based on the feedback above, I've also tried to customise this standard profile's audio settings by changing:
Codec: MPEG 4 Audio (ACC)
Channels: 2 (this is the default)
Bitrate: 256
Samplerate: 48000

Alas, this still results in no audio :(

Now, I've noticed that if I look at VLC's media information window for the resulting .mp4 file, it has the following settings:

Stream 0
Codec: DV Video (dv )
Type: Video
....
Stream 1
Codec: MPEG ACC Audio (mp4a)
Type: Audio
Sample Rate: 48000 Hz
Bits per Sample: 16

So I noticed that the source has streams 0 and 2 (see above), whilst the result has streams 0 and 1. I also noticed that the result doesn't show "Channels: Stereo". Hmm. This may have no significance, but I also noticed (using HandBrake - sorry VLC :) that the source has two audio streams? Just FYI, I've also tried to convert using HandBrake, and the audio does come out but at a low frequency (as if playing at half speed, only not half speed - if that makes any sense :)

Note that the source .avi plays just fine in VLC, with sound. It's only after conversion that the sound goes missing.

Any thoughts, anyone?

Many thanks in advance.

try 3.0.7 nightly build. There was a bug on MP3 muxing
http://nightlies.videolan.org/build/win64/
:!: If you want your problem to be solved :
* First read troubleshooting guide VSG:Main
* Always provide verbose LOGS ! (command line or from gui)
* Always check your issue against a developer build from Nightly Build of VLC
* Tell us when your problem is solved !

I GOT IT!!!!! After I tried everything, the audio still wasn't working. UNTIL I clicked to edit the profile (the little wrench) and saw that my settings in codec weren't actually saving. Changed it there and BOOM!

I'm having the same problem. I am converting a DVD of home movies (burned on a DVD recorder from a VHS-c video) to an mp4. The DVD does have audio so it isn't the DVD or the burning process. It also plays fine with audio if I use VLC's media player. It just doesn't have audio with Windows Media Player and Windows 10 Movies/Tv. Other MP4 files play fine on Windows, just not the ones that were converted with VLC.

i figured it out if anyone is still interested. When using the mp4 option i clicked the audio codec and chose the MPEG 4 audio (AAC) option instead of the default mpeg audio and changed the sample rate to 48000. Hope this helps!

Hello, I am here to thank you for the solution. sample rate to 48000 and audio AAC codec did it! Thank you.
