no sound on tiger 10.4.2

I have no sound on any video files when i connect the optical cable to my home cinema amp, but I have sound when i just use the mac speakers when i view video thru VLC, any ideas????

The Tiger version doesn't support digital outputs in 0.8.2
Read the README.MacOSX.rtf file that was accompanied with the 0.8.2 release, or read the NEWS file for more information.

I guess you mean it doesn't support apple's built in digital outputs? I use VLC through my MOTU 2408mkIII all the time running 100% digital with no problems ...

Another thing I've noticed as well, is that VLC can even request the hardware to change sampling rate from 44.1k to 48k ;) While at times this has caused me grief it is the proper behavior

No, it means that digital out is currently not working in the default audio output module of the 0.8.2 version. The ReadMe file explains the details.
