VLC 2.0.1 upgrade problems Win 7 x64

Postby jayman42 » 26 Mar 2012 03:50

Hi,

Apologies if this has been covered elsewhere (if so, please point me in the right direction)...

I just tried upgrading to VLC 2.0.1 and, during the upgrade process, the first three files to be extracted (vlc.exe, libvlc.dll and libvlccore.dll) all produced the same error message :"Error opening file for writing". It would allow me to ignore these and continue the installation, but upon completion, I cannot open VLC by right-clicking on a video file (any format) and selecting "Open with - VLC media player".

If I open VLC by clicking on the desktop icon, it brings up a warning every time, asking me if I want to let vlc.exe modify Windows. Once it is open, a quick version check still shows it as being the previous version.

I have removed all versions of the program and reinstalled an earlier version (the one I was successfully using before - 1.0.11) but, while it will install with no errors, it too will no longer allow me to right-click on a file and play straight away and it gives me the same warning message about vlc.exe wanting to modify Windows.

Any suggestions/fixes would be appreciated.

Thanks.

OK, some quick fiddling about showed an old VLC process still working in the background which was disrupting the upgrade process.

Have now upgraded successfully to VLC 2.0.1 with no errors.

However, the warning message about vlc.exe wanting to modify windows still comes up every time I try to open VLC manually or simply click on a file to play in it.

Is there any way I can modify permissions in Win 7 purely for this file to allow it bypass that notice screen?

Could you capture a screenshot from that dialog?

Same issue here on W7 Professional 64-bit. There's a UAC dialog to install, as normal, then the license agreement, then the component selection (I always uncheck Desktop shortcut and Context menus), then destination folder selection (left as default), and then it moves into the installation. The screenshots are available here (all combined into one image for your convenience). I receive this error continuously, not just three times like OP, so I did not let it install (I would've been clicking the ignore button for an hour before it finally went through).

Thanks!

EDIT: The above refers to the 32-bit executable. I perused the FTP server and discovered the 64-bit executable, and that installed and runs with no problems.

I was having the same problem and it seems I found a solution.

Open the Task Manager and in the Processes tab look for vlc.exe and end the process. That solved the problem for me.

I have a more simple problem and that is after downloading the file vlc-2.0.1-win64.7z I extracted it to the folder vlc-2.0.1 but I cannot find any extraction program (.exe) to install the program. Can anyone help with how to install the 64 bit VLC?

Thanks Kym

You don't install .7z or .zip versions. You just extract them and run vlc.exe from that folder.

I'm having similar problem. I'm trying to upgrade to vlc 2.0.2, but I get error message 'cannot open vlc 2.0.2-win32.exe for writting', and that's the end of the process. No explanation, no 'try this' etc. I'm a complete novice. So, someone please, if you can, explain this to me as you would a 5 year old. Thanks for any help

A ghost instance is still running in the background.
Reboot your computer and try again.
