Display date/time marquee on recording playback

Postby clemenzina » 21 Mar 2012 02:00

VLC will add date/time to mms video streams whilst they are being played live and recorded, but the text doesn't show up when the recording is played back.

This is vital when, say, long footage has been edited into short clips joined together, so that one can see the actual time of "events" and where footage has been excised. It's even more vital for guidance when doing the excising.

(I've been trying to think of a use for the date/time marquee as it stands, and cannot. When I'm watching a stream playing on my desktop I know what time it is - surely the only reason for having it is to see what the date/time was at the time of recording when playing it back later? :? I bet someone can tell me 101 reasons now ;) )

I'm really desperate for this feature to be fully functional.

You really need VLC 2.0.1

I am using 2.0.1 (I saw you advise someone with a different problem to install a "nightly" so found them and did it myself - is there any particular "night" to choose?) - could you tell me how to fix it? I have a thread in the General Troubleshooting, no solution has been found.

I was confused, because of the slider.
You need to transcode then and use soverlay to add the marquee.

Just a note for information - as currently configured with the date/time marquee, VLC displays the current at the time of paying date/time on top of whatever video recording it plays, by no matter what recording software including itself.

This is useless because at best it is ruining the viewing experience, at worst it is misinforming the viewer :? Need to be able to toggle it on/off? But unless it will record the current date/time and display it on playback, I shall have to strip out the marquee stuff.

I hope you realise I shall soon need an eye transplant!

(VLC is now playing its own recordings of the mms stream, recorded in asf, which it wouldn't yesterday :?: Must've been a glitch, I will inform them in feature request.)
