I am willing to post my logs also.

I have hunted through the 2.0.0 GUI, this forum, Google and various user guides for how to set the verbosity setting to 2.

I have attempted to set this from the command line in Terminal on my G4 Mini with no success.

I am obviously missing something simple, I would appreciate if someone can give me the required syntax
It should be preferences -> show all -> interface

Petardo was faster than me. I can post my logs too if it can be of any help.

I wonder why the crash log is not exploitable. It's a reproducible crash with the same thread crashing every time

Ok, this is weird. It could be a swscale issue.

I get the red stripes also. I'm on a G4 PowerBook (NVIDIA video card) with OS X 10.5.8 and VLC 2.0.1.

Ok, this is weird. It could be a swscale issue.
To check that, I just tried different interpolation algorithms in the advanced preferences (Video->Filter->Swscale)

I made the following obervation:

If I use one of the following scalers, I get these red stripes, and the other colours are distorted:
Bicubic (good quality)
Gauss
SincR
Lanczos
Bicubic Spline

If I select a scaler not mentioned above, the whole video has a red layer on top of it.

VLC 2.0.1 ran on 10.5.8 on an iMac G4 800MHz with a GeForce 2MX.

If you need additional information, don’t hesitate to ask. :)

Best regards,
manuuu

Upgraded to 2.0 last night. Running Mini Mac G4 PPC with OSX 10.5.8. On playing video get vertical red stripes across player screen plus color is way off - i.e. glowing green eyes - blue/green skin tones. Tried reseting preferences and many other things - nothing works. VLC would also begin to start crashing if I made changes to settings, so I changed back to default. Could find no way to fix the red jail bar effect. Does anyone know where I can find an older version of VLC to download and install after I delete this version?

I just installed 2.0.1 on both of Power Mac MDD and I still get vertical stripes on both machines.

Station 1: MDD G4 2x1.42Ghz (2002 Fw 800 Model): OS X 10.5.8 Installed. Ram: 2GB.
Station 2: MDD G4 2x1.25Ghz (2003 OS9 Bootable Model): OS X 10.5.8 Installed. Ram: 2GB.

Addendum: AGP Radeon 9000 (stock) on both units.

Will try to post a picture later (my hosting plan is down right now).

Update -> Here's the pic:

Thanks !

PA.

I am running a PPC G4 1.5GHZ Mac Mini with Leopard 10.5.8 For as long as I can remember VLC has been the best player that I found, However after updating recently to Version 2.0.1 Twoflower (PowerPC 32bit) I now have vertical red lines through all video types. avi, mkv, mp4 you name it there there. There is also the issue of the colours being way off, the colours are all pushed to the blue/green end of the spectrum. All in all now an unusable program. I have had to revert back to Version 1.1.5 The Luggage (PowerPC 32bit) in order to be able to watch files. I have looked on a few forums and the general consensus seems to be that VLC did not take into account the older graphics cards installed on simular machines to mine and earlier, hence the update is a little unfriendly for these models. My Mini uses the ATI Radeon 9200 card. I read on one forum that VLC are aware of this and that in version 2.0.1 there would be a fix, Anyone with further info on this please post as its starting to feel a bit like when firefox dumped PPC.

No, we do not dumped PPC. 2.0.1 works fine on G5. We are trying to see what is happening on PPC G4, but we have no hardware to test, so far.

Jean-Baptiste... I'm just a newcomer here so maybe this point has been answered before : is the vertical red stripes limited only to Radeon graphic cards ? or is it more generally a G4 issue ? One of my MDD has an additional Radeon 7000 card in a PCI slot - let me try to run 2.0.1 via this card (so far it's a bust on the AGP Radeon 9000s). Merci !

I think the issue is related to a bug in those graphic cards drivers in X.5. The shader support is broken, IMVHO.

Testing different cards would help yes. But what truly is needed is a guy with those machines able to compile VLC.

We might do that in the end. But then, what do we do with this machine?

i have a G4 Mac mini with a Radeon 9200 card running 10.5.8. Unfortunately i have some troubles compiling the 2.0.1 sources. You may send me a PM since i don't think we have to discuss compile problems here.

Best regards,
Kai.

Re: VLC 2.0 Leopard PPC: red vertical stripes

Postby khambrecht » 22 Mar 2012 16:52

Now i managed to successfully compile VLC. But the red stripes are still there.

Technical details:
* G4 Mac Mini / Radeon 9200 / OSX 10.5.8 / Xcode 3.1.4
* source checkout from git using tag "2.0.1"
* had to tweak "extras/package/macosx/build.sh" to use "llvm-gcc-4.2" resp. "llvm-g++-4.2" instead of clang (clang isn't included in xcode 3.1.x), and "TRIPLET=$ARCH-apple-darwin9" instead of "TRIPLET=$ARCH-apple-darwin10"
* also using prebuild contrib libraries.
* build.sh with "-a powerpc -k 10.5"

Any suggestion now on tweaking something to see if we could fix the red stripes?

Latest for 10.5.8 is Xcode 3.1.4 http://adcdownload.apple.com/Developer_ ... perdvd.dmg
But as mentioned in the wiki instructions http://wiki.videolan.org/OSXCompile#QTs ... ion_on_X.5 you also need some bits from a later SDK. I took these from Xcode 3.2.6
