VLC 2.0 - poor DVD support

Postby zWaR » 27 Feb 2012 09:50

Hello,

we've discovered trouble playing some dvds. The debug output on the most computers is:

Code: Select all

And the DVD won't start to play (even after waiting for around 10min).

On a few other comps (having different hw configuration), the otput is slightly different and the same DVD starts to play:

The DVD tested is an official dvd, without regional protection (works on all regions).
OS: Win7 32bit
VLC: 2.0.0
Both DVD Drives use RPC II scheme, with Regional Code set to 2.
Drives where the DVD won't start use firmare VHD7
Drive where the DVD starts use firmware R90C

DVD's video preferences analyzed with DVD Decryptor are as follows:
Compression: MPEG-2
TV System: NTSC 525/60 Hz
Aspect Ration: 4:3
Display Mode: Not Specified
Bit Rate: VBR
Resolution: 720x480 (NTSC)
Letterboxed: No
Mode: Camera

DVD's audio preferences analyzed with DVD Decryptor:
0x80: AC3 (2Ch) 48 kHz DRC
0x81: AC3 (2Ch) 48 kHz DRC
0x82: AC3 (2Ch) 48 kHz DRC
0x83: AC3 (2Ch) 48 kHz DRC
0x84: AC3 (2Ch) 48 kHz DRC
0x85: AC3 (2Ch) 48 kHz DRC
0x86: AC3 (2Ch) 48 kHz DRC
0x87: AC3 (2Ch) 48 kHz DRC

SubPicture information lists an inclusive interval between 0x20 and 0x37

Do the additional lines in the second output indicate a codec vlc used to play the dvd?

Interestingly if the VIDEO_TS.IFO file is manually opened, video starts to work on problematic computers as well.

Must be another libdvdread incompatibility.

Any chance this will be fixed in one of the upcoming releases?

One bug related to RPC-1 drives was fixed, but I would guess there are some more left.
