v2 high cpu consume then v1 ,under xp

Postby judas black » 22 Feb 2012 15:57

Hi

i did notice a higher cpu consuming then v1 , under xp
for example a oscillation between 18% to 30% and sometime to 50% of cpu

i renamed these file
libsamplerate_plugin.dll to libsamplerate_plugin.dll2
libspeex_resampler_plugin.dll to libspeex_resampler_plugin.dll2

and now the cpu consume is 0.9 or 1% and the file is xvid 640x336 audio mp3 128 cbr

but still high at 50% cpu for mov file H264 - MPEG-4 AVC (part 10) (avc1),risolution : 960x540 , audio MPEG AAC Audio (mp4a)

is there a fix for the mov files?

thanks
cheers

Hi,

Have the same issue, also if video is paused vlc takes 25-30% cpu usage. While playing it takes up to 55%.
CPU is Core 2duo P8400 2,2GHz, Intel shared GMA450 video.
Windows XP SP3, VLC 2.0.0, same result with GPU acceleration enabled and disabled.

What is the CPU consumption with libspeex_resampler_plugin.dll normal?

Same problem here (since v2).
Thank you judas black for the workaround, it's muuuuuch better now :)
Data: Intel Core 2 Duo T9300@2.50GHz, NVIDIA GeForce 8600M GT 512MB, 3GB RAM, Win XP x32.
From vlc v2 on all versions consume 40-50% of CPU (so up to 100% of the first core which leads to extremely slowness of all other processes using the first).
Since renaming the 2 files named above now it is just 10-15% in pause mode and 25-35% while playing, it's still very high but at least other programmes will not freeze the whole time...

What is the CPU consumption with libspeex_resampler_plugin.dll normal?
it does differ on the file
for example
file mov ->cpu 40-50% media, average
H264 - MPEG-4 AVC (part 10) (avc1)
resolution: 960x540
Frame rate: 29.970000
Type: Audio
Codec: MPEG AAC Audio (mp4a)

filr avi -> cpu 20%-35% media, average
Codec: MPEG-4 Video (XVID)
Resolution: 720x304
Frame rate: 25
Codec: MPEG Audio layer 1/2/3 (mpga)
Bitrate: 192 kb/s
Sample rate: 48000 Hz
Channels: Stereo

I have just discovered something, don't know whether it's the same problem like at the beginning of this thread anymore. The cpu consumption goes up with resizing the window to a bigger one. So in a small window there is no problem but fullscreen is almost impossible, then it takes up to 100% (both cores). But this just happens when the window is on the second screen (earlier I forgot to mention that I use 2 screens), when being on the first screen vlc works very well without consuming much cpu. So I think there must be a problem with the video output mode/settings, but I did not change anything/the settings when I installed the new version, the old one did not have this issue.

without them , i moved them in another folder and it is better
for example the mov file need max 20%cpu
the same avi file around 3-10%

but i think it's not the perfect solution , delete them or renamed them
i guess there is something wrong under xp

Now I know why fullscreen mode on second screen is not possible anymore due to too high cpu usage.
It is because overlay mode does not work anymore. I have installed vlc several times now and deleted settings/cache, etc., overlay mode is activated. It just does not work. :(

Edit: Nevermind, I solved this by using v1.1.7 portable from now on. It's the last really working version. Nearly no crashes, plays more files correctly, overlay is working and cpu consumption is max 10%. I am so annoyed by all versions since this. I will try new version when next "stable" release comes, so see you next year.

I got it from http://sourceforge.net/projects/portabl ... 0Versions/, there you can find nearly all versions as portable ones.
It took me quite a while of searching because the list isn't shown in the normal search results.
You can find it on pirate bay, too, but I don't trust software offered over p2p.
You can also use the non portable one at http://download.videolan.org/pub/videolan/vlc/1.1.7/, it worked for me the same way.
I just use the portable version to be able to test newer versions without messing with the settings.
However I hope it will work for you like it does for me because my experiences is that there is a versions for everyone but it depends on the usage.

I am also seeing very high CPU with 2.0.0 and 2.0.1 (NB) on windows xp

With 1.1.x the cpu per vlc video stream (720x576 UDP) is about 10%, with 2.0.x it is over 30%

I tried to disable the two dll files mentioned earlier and it did not help me.

Has anyone got another other suggestions?

may i ask a question?
did you do a compare between vlc 1.1.x and vlc 2.0.0 and 2.0.1 ?

which version of vlc 1.1.x has the lower cpu consume?

because i'm doing several tests to find the issue

thanks

I installed again the 1.1.11 version because With the version 2.0 I see higher cpu consuming, much more than v1 (xp)
for example sometime to 90% of cpu with online video (sopcast), and the video is slowed.
with normal avi or mkv between 30% and 70%.

Could be fixed in the next version?

Thank you!

to be honest i can see much difference between all the 1.1.x versions - all about the same

Just the huge leap going from 1.1.x -> 2.0.x

What i?
may i ask a question?

could be the high cpu consume related to non Vlc codec?

i mean for example codecs (old or recent quick video )installed on the operation system

is there a way to be sure vlc uses their codecs without coflicts?

thank

Playing the same videos (avi, mkv mpg ...), the same sopcast channel... and there are a big difference between 1.11.111 and 2.0 about cpu consume, if is only a number no problem, but the video go very slow.. whit a high cpu consume. No codec problems, no audio problems, the problem is with the new version. I have installed again the 1.11 version waiting the bugs can be fixed.
I dont say this to claim nothing, only to help to make a better next version without thouses problems. I only want to help to videolan people.
